Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Syrie Roman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Syrie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I started my company I knew I didn’t want it to be named after myself or the specific services we provided. I wanted to sound chic but approachable, and trustworthy without being too braggy. I’m a fan of word origins, definitions, and etymology. At the time, I had a thesaurus app on my phone, so I had an idea – put “party” and “expert” in the app and see which synonyms were generated…and voilá! There it was in front of me “Social” and “Maven”. That’s how my company name was born.
Syrie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My background spans across Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Catering, Event Production, and Wedding Planning. Social Maven started with a dream, a lot of hustle, and a deep love for creating memories for people.
After 12 years in event management – from working at event venues to small and intimate weddings – I decided to start Social Maven. I often laugh when people think our job is glamorous, there is so much work behind the scenes that no one sees, that’s what we thrive on. The hours upon hours on our feet, small (internal) panic attacks when something doesn’t go as planned – at the end of the day it’s all part of the experience of designing, creating, and thoughtfully executing the perfect day for our client and their guests.
Before being an event planner, I used to manage restaurants and catering departments for different venues, so I know what they need and how we can come together to make a great event. It truly takes a village – a village of good vendors and a fastidious amount of organization and details. My background comes as a huge advantage when dealing with vendors and venues, as I can ensure all the correct steps are being taken and all our bases are covered. We discuss every single detail, – Every minute of the day is accounted for and every detail explained at length. We communicate with each vendor to ensure that your vision is met and everyone is on the same page. Plus a good sense of humor always helps.
At Social Maven, we’re all about celebrating uniqueness because we know that one size definitely doesn’t fit all when it comes to weddings and events. We approach each wedding with a personalized touch, infusing purpose, genuine intentions, and a little love into every detail.
We understand that planning a wedding (or any event!) can be a stressful experience. That’s why we strive to provide our clients with stress-free wedding days. We focus on understanding your vision, wants, and needs. We listen so that we understand the kind of support you need from us. Collaboration is at the core of our approach. We’ve built a community of top-tier professionals ready to make your event exceptional. Our philosophy is all about transparency, giving our clients honest recommendations and connecting them with vendors who match their vision and needs.
While our team is highly experienced and detail-oriented, we pride ourselves on not being overbearing, too strict, or demanding. Our genuine love for clients and deep concern for their well-being shine through in every interaction. Our goal is to consistently create extraordinary, one-of-a-kind events that authentically represent who our clients are and what they love. We are committed to honoring their story through every detail of the planning experience.
Above all, we understand that beautiful, thoughtful events are not an accident. They are a result of commitment, focus, intelligent planning, and a little magic.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We not only focus on exceeding our clients expectations but we also focus on being the best partners we can be to the vendor team. Our relationships with the vendor community is as important to us as is our relationship with our clients. Our business thrives on word of mouth.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Naturally, like the rest of the world, we had to make some business choices in 2020. Since our business fully depends on people being able to gather, I was not entirely sure how things would turn out for us. One thing I knew was that I could not abandon my clients. So, I decided to become the authority on the new gathering rules and regulations as they came were rolled our by our local authorities, that way I could educate everyone and help them navigate postponements and move forward. Our business really thrived that year, we gained our clients confidence even more than before and helped a lot of people through that tough year.
