We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Syreeta O. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Syreeta below.
Alright, Syreeta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think it takes perseverance, determination, resilience and foresight to be successful. A lot of people give up before they even reach their peak because it’s not coming fast enough for them or they expect overnight success and they give up when success could’ve been right around the corner. If my plan is not coming into fruition fast enough I reevaluate my approach and regroup, but I will never give up, it’s not in me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an artist and an all around triple threat, I rap, sing and act. I got my start writing for other artists because at first I didn’t really have the courage to do it myself. Music was something I did as an outlet and while I was passionate about it I just hated the vulnerability that came with it because I wasn’t ready mentally. As I started discovering who I am as a person and as an artist the thing that I’m most proud of is my ability to touch and connect with people. I performed at a show and afterwards I was swarmed with a crowd and a lady fought her way through it and said “Please don’t leave without meeting my daughter” I told her to bring her over and that I would wait, when she brought her over the little girl was crying asking to hug me, she was so emotional that I felt like she needed more I was like do you want a picture, do you want to go on my Instagram? She said no, she didn’t have a phone, she said she just really wanted to hug me and that she loved me. I can’t think of a better feeling or more heartfelt and prideful moment, that will forever stay with me.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Several! We can start with me being in a girl group as a teenager and getting right to a labels door and them saying NOPE! We changed our mind we decided to go in a different direction. The other ladies who were in that group stopped singing, I didn’t!
Then I was in a rap group with three guys and they had discrepancies amongst them so the group dismembered and I was left by myself and forced to rebrand and start over, and I did exactly that while the guys stopped making music, I kept going!
After that, I’ve met countless false “saviors” and I said that because everyone in this industry swears they know the key to putting you on, but there were so many empty promises and music and time that was lost which hurt because those are songs and stories of my life and pieces of me and they were just washed down the drain every time somebody in this industry didn’t prove themselves to be who they said they are, yet each time, I regrouped, refocused and started all over again. Countless times, and I’ll start over as many times as I need to in order to be successful because this is my passion and my purpose!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That nobody is “right” when it comes to music. So many producers, engineers, song writers will come to you excited like “I HAVE A SMASH, it’s a CERTIFIED HIT! There’s no such thing, you never know how this market will shift, Music is a feeling and a movement, you have to let your audience determine a hit, never go in the studio with the mindset that this plus this is going to automatically equal a hit! You’re doing yourself a disservice.
