We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sylvie Damargi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sylvie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
A positive crazy story was that I got a direct message on Instagram from Revive Fashion Week saying that they love my work and invited me to photograph LAFW. I was excited and nervous because it was my first time taking pictures for a fashion show. I arrived to LAFW and took photos of hair and make-up, runway, and red carpet. I edited and sent pictures within two days to Revive Fashion Week, the designers, models, etc. The next day, I got an email from one of the designers about selecting a photographer to take pictures of their new collection and they chose me. I was overjoyed because as a photographer living in Los Angeles, that is huge and I felt my work was being noticed.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a portrait/headshot, commercial, fashion, editorial, and event photographer based in Los Angeles. I took Photography 1-2 in my junior year of high school and loved it so much that I took Photography 3-4 in my senior year. I didn’t think of doing photography as a profession until my art professor told me “Before pursuing a career, look at what people in that industry do.” That was the moment I knew I wanted to become a photographer. I believe what sets me apart from other photographers is my style, creativity, and professionalism. I offer prints which I recommend because it has a lot of meaningful value. I do photoshoots in-studio, on-location, and open for travel. I am easy to work with and I make sure to exceed my client’s expectations. I am proud when clients are happy with the results and they either want to work with me again or refer people to me to take their photos.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel that people think photography is an easy job by just clicking a button, but in reality, it takes a lot of work. You have to know how the camera functions and what lens to use for a photoshoot, understand lighting and the physics behind it, and develop your own style. What makes well-known photographers such as David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton, etc. so unique and standout is that they have their own style with a purpose.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me is networking through events, having referrals, and getting requests from social media.
