We were lucky to catch up with Sylvie Cloutier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sylvie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From early childhood, I knew it. I always wanted to draw, to do any kind of tinkering. My parents, with a musician as a mother and a father who accepted that we could take the professional path we wanted, I started to paint. My dad offered me a correspondence course FAMOUS ARTISTS SCHOOL, Westport, Connecticut, USA. Norman Rockwell was a prood representative of this great school. For 3 years, I ‘ve had an extraordinary story. So, it was the beginning !!!!!!
I was made to be, probably an art teacher, for sure go for higher education at University. I wanted to learn all the techniques and the ambiance around that world. Here in Quebec, after highschool, we go to the CEGEP, for 2 years ( in my case), before to be accepted at the University. And I did 4 years in FINE ARTS, at the UNIVERSITY CONCORDIA, here in Montreal, in Quebec. I did too, a certificate in education at the UNVERSITÉ DE MONTRÉAL. Even if my dad wanted for me the best, he was not very keen on the idea to be only AN ARTIST. So after 32 years of teaching in Arts, in highschool, where I was so in my place, happy…..sharing my passion with my students.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The fact that I was teaching full time, I didn’t do as much as I wanted, in my painting. It did not leave me enough time to develop the dissemination of my art. I was working, research in abstract images for 35 years, my own style and signature. But I’m represented in galleries for more than 35 years. The owner of those galleries did and do today the work of diffusion.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I thank life each day to be able to create, to have an extraordinary, bright workshop, in nature, in Easter Town Ships, here in Quebec.it’s so inspiring. This is the most rewardind aspect. Take the time to say to the world, in pictures, who I am.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I don’t know if it’s resilience, but I’m able to see the glass half full. I’m represented in several galleries, and you have to fight, cause there is a lot of good artsits in the world. You have to work hard, to keep a unique and new image, quality too. You have to wait til a painting is sold. But I still trust.
