We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sylvia Perkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sylvia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Back in 2017, when I realized working in retail just wasn’t for me or where I wanted to end up in the next 10 years. I always had a passion for business, Entertainment, and fashion. I always wanted to put my degree from Benedict College to good use entering the entertainment industry and utilizing my skills to obtain all 3 paths as stated earlier. Developing an action plan was key to get to where I wanted to go to implement my artistic vision in relation to music and fashion.
Sylvia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started off with a group called Carolina Queens with myself and my partner Ta’Myia Allen where we focused on the media aspect of events in our city and community. We conducted numerous interviews with local tastemakers and major celebrities in the industry. That journey led to restarting my own podcast The Stay On Beat Podcast and The Say More Podcast with Sylvia Darlene. The problems I ran into mostly was balancing my 9-5 and my projects I wanted to accomplish. I had to discipline myself to stay consistent because in my mind I’ve always said this will pay off one way or the other. Which it did because I was noticed by Tutu Durant and DJ Loui Vee in Columbia SC to be apart of the radio station 100.1 The Beat as a Midday Radio Personality. Im most proud of my work I’ve done the radio station because it created a lot more opportunities for me to work more in my community, schools, and highlighting business owners in the city.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Moving throughout the entertainment history can be taxing on your mental and body, especially if you have a family and household to maintain as well. So I made it my personal goal to incorporate including fitness in my journey as well so I can stay healthy and have a clear mind focusing on my career. I owe nothing but gratitude to my personal trainer James Adams for guiding me towards a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Staying fit and maintaining a healthy diet definitely helps me in my career.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having the ability to express my creative ideas and freedom to the masses. I love presenting new projects to my listeners and followers because they are extremely supportive in what I do. For my listeners I provide a different perspective on current events and entertainment news. My listeners are so receptive and always provide positive feedback, so that’s the rewarding part of my career.
