Sylvia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope to build a legacy of Hope. I want other girls/women that look at me see the possibilities.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Dr. Sylvia Gholston and I am a professor turned franchiser owner/stager/interior designer. I got into this business by taking a hobby and making it a reality. I provide great staging that helps homeowners get their home sold for more money and for a shorter amount of time on the market. I solve the problem of “not envisioning yourself inside of a vacant home”. I am different from my competitors because I truly stage for “the buyer” and I provide a beautiful space for the homeowner where they can honestly let go and reduce some of that “seller” stress. I am most proud of the multiple levels of staging we can provide. Each home is different so each staging is different. Each staging receives the same amount of care and detail. We treat each home special.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my business partner in college at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA in 1998. We are now married with three children and we own this franchise together.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Showhomes of Cobb is a franchise that we purchased. We had to learn franchise laws, understand what a DBA is and how to work within the guidelines. The process included research and training under the standards of the franchise we purchased. We had to be approved by the owner and then work with a bank that understands the difference between buying a franchise and just opening a business. I was a long process but we made it through.
