Sylvia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
A few years back my trademark for Pure Beauty Skinbar was opposed, At first i didn’t know how to feel because I had been building something for years, my attorney told me we could do one of two things: Fight it which meant who knows how much the legal fees would be or change the name. So after careful consideration I decided that i would rebrand and give a new name that had more meaning. Skin by Brownlee & Co was born because I am the last living Brownlee in my family therefore the legacy can live on.
Sylvia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since her childhood, Sylvia Brownlee had always aspired to make a meaningful impact in the beauty industry. After completing her studies at a cosmetology school, Brownlee embarked on a successful career at a prestigious salon, where she honed her skills for a decade. Recognized as a rising star, she transitioned into salon management and eventually assumed the role of Director of Education at a renowned skincare institution. It was during this time that she discovered her true passion: helping individuals dealing with acne and hyperpigmentation to improve their lives. “Having personally experienced both conditions, I understand how profoundly they can impact one’s self-esteem and confidence,” Brownlee reflects. “When your skin is clear and radiant, it can truly make you feel amazing!” In 2015, fueled by her belief in the transformative power of proper skincare, Brownlee took a leap of faith and founded Skin by Brownlee & Co. Her mission was to educate others on how to love and care for their skin, fostering a sense of self-worth and well-being.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I was previously employed as the executive director of a renowned cosmetology school, where I had the opportunity to oversee the operations and management of the institution. However, due to certain circumstances, I unfortunately faced a layoff from that position. While it was initially a challenging experience, this turn of events ultimately became a catalyst for a positive change in my career. Prior to my role as an executive director, I had been working part-time in a suite, providing skincare services to clients. This part-time endeavor had always been a passion of mine, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with clients and helping them improve their skin health and appearance. However, it was the layoff from my executive director position that pushed me to reassess my professional path and make the bold decision to transition into running my skincare business full time. This significant life event served as a wake-up call, prompting me to pursue my true passion and take control of my own destiny. Recognizing the demand for high-quality skincare services and products, I decided to fully commit to launching and expanding my own skincare business. Since making the leap to full-time entrepreneurship, I haven’t looked back. Running my own skincare business has allowed me to combine my expertise in the beauty industry and my passion for helping clients achieve their skincare goals. I have the freedom to create my own schedule, develop innovative skincare treatments, and curate a range of effective skincare products tailored to my clients’ needs. By leveraging my experience, skills, and the network I built throughout my career, I have been able to establish a successful skincare business that continues to grow and thrive. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my passion and make a positive impact on the lives of my clients, empowering them to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.
