We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sylvia Bremer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sylvia below.
Sylvia, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I feel that as a songwriter, I try to be intentional about my songs as much as possible. Even if I am writing a story that’s not from personal experience, it has to be meaningful. Ofcourse, hearing my songs, you’ll notice that they’re mostly about love, relationships, and mental health issues. I am working on writing new material that can tell other stories and is not solely focused on that part of my life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi,
My name is Sylvia Bremer. I am originally from Miami, Florida and currently reside in New York City. I have been singing and performing since I was three years old and writing my own songs since I was thirteen. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, music was my escape. Any chance I got I would be involved in music through school or summer camp. I sang the national anthem at my high school dances, auditioned for theatre and was even in band/choir and color guard. When I turned 18, an old friend from theatre camp asked me to write and record vocals in a studio and that’s where my career began to take off. I was also in college studying music production and was planning on transferring to Berkeley College of Music. However, I became too busy with music and work to continue college. So, in 2017 I began collaborating with artists and producers. I auditioned for THE VOICE, X FACTOR, and other shows (my auditions never aired) and I began transitioning from being a featured artist to being a solo artist. Then in 2019, I ventured off from doing VoiceOver work and collaborations to writing for myself. I then released my first single “2 AM”. During this time I also decided to invest in equipment and build a home studio so that I could write and record for other artists, which I did and sometimes do on Fiverr. Most recently I am working on an EP that I hope to release later this year. It will have more of a neon pop sound and maybe some indie influence. I used to want to shape my work around what the people want, but now I do it more for me and that’s what makes my newer music special. Whoever connects with that, those are my people.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are a few things that come across as rewarding when being an artist/creative. For me it comes down to two things, seeing your vision leave your mind and being out In the real world. Knowing that, YOU created that, YOU cultivated that. That’s beautiful. The second thing, and the most rewarding, would be seeing other people connect with your work of art. I’ve had plenty of people tell me they connect to songs I didn’t think were even that great, and yet those songs saved them. Or knowing my voice has touched someone in the audience that made them book a flight to come see me perform again and again. It gives you purpose.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’d like to give an intricate answer but truth is there is no right way to build your following. Just be yourself. I remember years ago, I would try to take the right pictures, film the right covers with the right camera, lighting, makeup, outfit, etc. in order to attract the right audience. But what is the right audience if you are not being your authentic self? The best piece of advice I got once for social media is, ” Be yourself. Post whatever, whenever. It doesn’t matter if the quality isn’t the best, the sound (your art), that’s what will attract the audience. I have to be honest, I have not been as active on social media as I should be so my followers haven’t really increased much over the past couple of years. But I do think just posting and being yourself is the best way to grow your audience authentically.
