We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sylvester Britton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sylvester, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes I have . But I had to have three paying gigs a week. Preferably the weekends.(Friday sat and Sunday) also do open mics on the weekdays.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a 24 year cancer survivor. And that brought me to comedy. When u was in the hospital I looked at def comedy jam and comic view vcr tapes. And said to myself imma be a comedian . I got on stage when I was in high at our talent show when I was 17. I’m proud that I overcame cancer and still followed my dream. I want everyone to see my testimony and know you can overcome anything.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding feeling is to see everyone around you smile laugh giggle and for my friends family son and nephew to be proud.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Eddie Murphy was a big influence on me . From his stand up show( raw and delirious) and movies . My favorites is Beverly Hills cop 1,2 , golden child, Harlem nights , life , and boomerang.
