Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sydney Simpson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sydney, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
“Don’t ever let anyone outwork you”
…is not a quote ever said by either of my parents, rather a motto they seemingly lived by.
At 14, my dad got his first job scrubbing dishes at a gas station. He worked hard and moved up (moved out, rather)
He kept working hard, he kept moving up.
Growing up, I saw his insane drive for his career, and his love for work. It was truly passion – a love story.
At 16, I begged my parents to let me have a job. What was this joyous experience that was work?
I had to know.
Although making sandwiches at subway didn’t fulfill my desire to jump on a plane and be gone 4 days out of the week like it did my dad, it did give me something else: financial freedom. Crazy what a few hundred bucks a month can do for a 16 year old!
By the time college came, my dad’s hard work, and my mom’s unmatched support,
had paid off – they were business owners!
I started working as an office admin for our family business, all while I served tables and pursued a marketing degree.
I spent a lot of time with my dad in that office, and while I wouldn’t call my 19-22 year old self particular dedicated to the role of office admin, I witnessed the dedication and nurturing it took to operate a business.
I wanted it for my own, and that was the plan.
Fast forward two years ago – 6 years after beginning my office admin gig, I had graduated to marketing coordinator, with a legit marketing degree. Covid was in full swing, and I was too comfortable in my role.
Lucky for me, I had the rug ripped out from under me when my parents told me the news: they were selling their business.
With a broken heart, and a scary new world of options, I started freelancing.
And I got a 40 hour a week job at a marketing agency. And I kept freelancing.
Before I quit my full time job, I was working 65 hour weeks, missing sleep, and preparing myself for the next phase: working for me.
My parents taught me the value of hard work, but never forced it on me.
I watched their hard work blossom and unfold. I watched them achieve success. I watched them live out their entrepreneurial dreams.
Whatever entrepreneur gene gets passed down from generation to generation, well, I got it bad.
Thanks to my parents, I’ve never let anyone outwork me – and truly, that’s why I am successful.
There are a lot of other factors that go into success, and luck has it’s part to play, but for me, hard work is always going to lead you where you need to go.
Thanks mom and dad!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Marketing was kind of a default for me. My mom did it, and I thought, I could probably do it too. Turns out, I’m a natural!
What I find is different about my business is: 1) I have a lot of experience (almost 9 years!)
2) I offer full scope marketing. Social media is my love by trade, but I truly believe you need the full picture to make an impact. That’s why my packages include website maintenance and updates, SEO, email marketing, local strategy, and more. How can you do well if you only have 1 piece of the puzzle?
I serve a lot of different types of businesses, but my heart lies with businesses in the realm of pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding. I find I am most connected to these types of businesses and serve them with a burning passion!
I help clients streamline their marketing and find what really works for them.
I help give them back time that they lost trying to manage social media alone.
I give them peace knowing that I’m guided by a well researched strategy that will help their business grow.
I’m most proud for putting myself out there. I’ve been officially on my own since the summer and I’ve made quite a few mistakes, but I’ve had soooo many wins that just wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t stepped outside the box.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to make an impact.
It is really that simple.
I want to help businesses owners help their people and change lives.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep my door open to my clients and chat with them frequently.
I ask for feedback often and always want to hear what they think about our work together.
I frequently hear “working with you is the best decision I have ever made” – that feels loyal to me!
