Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sydney Santos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sydney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Talk to us about building a team – did you hire quickly, how’d you recruit the first few team members? Any interesting lessons?
My business Millennium Hippie is a partnership. We currently have no employees. We contract work if we need it, but we are a new company so we haven’t gotten to a point where we can hire employees yet. Our team came together through the creator of our company. He pulled together people in his life that he knew would be a great asset to the business, from our president, to our graphic artist. Knowing what we know now, I think we would have figured out and solidified our roles earlier than we did. When we decided to become partners, we had ideas of what our roles would be, but they also weren’t super clear cut. I think being more clear would have been able to help us balance out duties as well as identify what we need from each other.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My business is a marketing and media company. We focus on the cannabis industry and social issues, all while providing a comedic experience through our beautiful comic books. We have other big plans but we’re currently mastering our comics. I have some background in business administration, as well as customer service. I got into this industry through the creator of our company. I originally became a vlog host for the brand a couple of years ago, before we fully formed. Over time I have ended up becoming the CFO. I also do a lot of back-end work like emails and distribution…wherever I’m needed and feel comfortable doing. I am most proud of the issues that we shed light on in our book while also staying culturally relevant as well as making people laugh. These days, it is hard to find media that actually makes you feel like part of a community and that makes you smile. That is one of our biggest goals and I think we do a pretty good job!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFTs are so exciting. It’s such an early time for NFTs, so I think it’s important to learn as much as you can now, while it is still early. Not every project is going to be successful, but being an early player is going to be so beneficial in our future. Like the internet stock boom in the late 90s/early 2000s, some of the biggest companies were birthed. Those that invested in Google or Apple 20 years ago have been able to see big profits over the years, like no other. Our company is planning to get into the NFT space very soon. We love the community behind NFTs and want to create a world for our supporters through this art and our unique characters.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is sharing my creations with the world. It can be scary to put your art out there, because it comes from a part of your mind or soul. And we tend to be our toughest critics. But I’ve found that even when I don’t get the feedback that I was hoping for, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that doesn’t compare to anything else. Being vulnerable and sharing with the world is empowering, even if you only reach one person or help one person. I don’t really know how to explain it, but it feels very satisfying.
