We recently connected with Sydney Rutherford and have shared our conversation below.
Sydney, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
That’s a loaded question, but I’ll do my best to answer. My hero in this life would undoubtedly be my Mother.
Mom taught me how to be a woman, how to accept who I am and she gave me the courage to believe in myself.
Her outlook on life growing up was always positive and full of wit. She was truly one of a kind. The purest soul with such compassion for people and animals.
Sadly my mother passed away 2 years ago, during the height of the pandemic. When this happened I lost apart of my self, I still struggle each day, grief is not something that just goes away.
However I’m constantly reminding myself that Mom wouldn’t want me to be sad forever. She’d want me to live like the world’s on fire, would want me to love with my whole heart and to ultimately learn to be at peace with myself.
I’ve learned a great deal from her, all I am and all my success thus far I attribute to her.
Helping Mom battle her sickness over the years, since I was a kid, taught me a lot.
I had to become responsible, independent and unfazed at an early age. This allowed me to be the best support system and caregiver I could be for her. I learned to not take anything in life for granted and to own who I am.
That’s where starting up my own business came into play, I knew I eventually wanted a life where I could allow my creativity to help others and bring them joy. A life in which I wake up each morning, happy with where I’m at, excited for what’s to come and the ability to call the shots.

Sydney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I recently started my own business in the digital content creating world. My company is called Syd’s Socials and essentially I have a passion for filming and photographer. I’ve always been the one who is taking the actions shots, videos – you name it. I find happiness in documenting my life and those around me. It’s these moments in time that we can’t ever get back, that truly makes me want to capture them in the first place. I started realizing my talent when others would approach me for advice and my skills. My tribe ultimately gave me the push I needed to take the plunge into starting my own business. I was very hesitant at first, I had some negative and intrusive thoughts for sure. I didn’t think I had what it took. But once I stopped letting my fears get in the way and actually listened to my boyfriend and friends, I knew I had it in me to make it in this industry. I’m fairly knew with all of this, but so far using my phone, my gimbal and a particular set of skills has helped me bring to life what the clients are looking for. I make sure to discuss prior to the event what they are envisioning as this helps me to better understand what they want. I find some clients don’t always know what they want either, which is quite alright. I’ve always been a natural born leader and can think quick on my feet. If ever they are uncomfortable while filming I make sure to be compassionate and considerate of the situation. Not everyone is good on the spot and often times don’t fair well when they have a camera on them. But by making the best of it, capturing lots of extra content and editing really does work wonders!
I’d have to say I’m not like anyone else, I’m very much my own person. When you meet me you’ll understand.
I beat to my own drum and find authentic people very captivating. I think this truly helps my clients feel as though they can trust me and the work I am producing.
I’m honestly just proud to be doing what I love. In such a fast paced world we tend to lose ourselves in the rat race, I don’t want that life, just not for me is all. Something about being your own boss just adds that little extra spice to life.

Have you ever had to pivot?
These last few years have been very trying to say the least. I’ve gone through grief, financial loss, unemployment and started the process of homecoming. This is when you come back to yourself. I got lost for a little while. I thought my corporate job in the medical field was my passion. That was until it wasn’t. I didn’t see any opportunity for growth within the company or real happiness for that matter. Money is great and all but if I ain’t happy at my job, I can’t continue on. I’ve always been one who needs to keep growing, exploring and fueling my passions in life. That’s where I really had to sit with myself and my thoughts. I had to take the time, like really take the time and decide what it is I want from this life. What legacy do I want to leave behind, who do I want to be and what do I want to do. Fast forward a few months and now I’m working two jobs my business and as a sample coordinator in my hometown and honestly I couldn’t be happier.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media is where it’s at! This has truly been the cornerstone of success in my business. The internet is a vast place with endless potential! I find if your willing to put in the work you will succeed.
