Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sydney Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sydney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope that people remember my entire story of persevering through adversity as an athlete, adult and business owner. My message as always been to be on the right side of things. Do things the right way. I worked my tail off to be the best athlete I could be. To win at the highest levels. As an adult, I/ve never expected to be given anything. Rather to work so hard that I am undeniably the best person for the job. As a business owner my mantra has always been to show up confidently, boldy and without apology for who am in the midst of public scrutiny and everyday life. I want to be remembered for staying true to myself and being one of the best to ever do my job while also looking fabulous doing it.

Sydney, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the business of ME when i was subjected to social media scrutiny for my choice of work clothing. Since then, I have turned that into business creating a suit line, several brand deals with many companies, writing a book and many more things. I am most proud at the fact that my story has continued to inspire so many people and that I have not wavered amidst continuous judgement and support.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think my authenticity and consistency helped me build my reputation with my market. While it is still a work in progress, people know that i am consistent with what my brand stands for. Confidence, class and professionalism.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started by posting more. I was intentional about the content I shared and since basketball was always a part of my life, I knew people would be interested in continuing to follow my journey after I retired from playing. Year after year I try to find ways I can be different in the content i share whilst staying true to me and my brand. My advice would be to find out what truly feels authentic for you. Know yourself well enough to have the honest conversations about what youre not good at and stay away from that. I am not great at remember scripts, so a lot of my content revolves around being unscripted so that I sound as authentic as possible. Try not to sound so “ad-y”
