We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sydney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sydney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In 2019 I decided to take a leap and start my own business. I have been assisting for a long time, but outgrew the position I was in. There was no more growth for me where I was currently at the time. I knew the only step up was to make a leap. I was scared but I knew if not now when would I ever do it.It was the best decision I’ve ever made. There was no look back it just felt so right.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had such a passion for design. When I was a kid I would always love to decorate the tables for each holiday event or party we had. As I got older my sister started her own business in the wedding industry doing makeup and hair. Because she was in the industry She connected me with a wedding coordinator. At the time I was working my full time job at Nordstrom, and on the weekends I would assist the wedding coordinator for free. Assisting gave me the opportunity to learn and to see if this was the right fit for me. Coordinating gave me so much hope that one day I can do this for my full time job. After so many years of assisting I knew the next step for me was to take a leap. I finally made the choice to branch off on my own. That is when I created Sugarlyn Events. It not common you find a coordinator that does both design and coordination. With my business I provide designing your event and coordination The best of both worlds. I have a huge passion for intimate events.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’m sure for most COVID-19 was the hardest time for them. I didn’t know if we would recover after that. It was the hardest time for my business. I literally made the jump to start in 2019 and got the momentum. Then to be hit hard in 2020 not knowing when we would see the light at the end of the tunnel. But during that time it gave me the opportunity to slow down and figure out what was best for me and my business moving forward.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would say for me I get so emotional evolve in all my clients we build such a great friendship. During the hardship I had to learn during 2020 it to let go and go with the flow. Not everything is in my control. But what I can control is how I will feel about it and find solution.
