We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sydnee Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydnee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I am honored to call the most supportive, loving, and hardworking two people I have ever met my parents. My parents have always stood by me and supported me through every aspect of my life. They have never let me feel alone or say I am not strong enough to make a goal. Every crazy idea, any change of opinion, or a minor decision, they have always encouraged me to make my dreams happen. My mom and dad have taught me that the sky is the limit and that I can do anything I put my mind to, no matter how hard. My parents have shown up to me at every school function and sporting event I ever had. I used to struggle with math in school, and my parents did everything in their power to ensure I always had what I needed to do my best to succeed. Even going to college and then cosmetology school, my parents ensured I could always chase my dream. My Mom and Dad have shaped how I view pushing myself and continuing to improve my future. I have a tattoo on my right arm in my mom’s handwriting- Romans 5:8 -“I loved you at your darkest and greatest victories.” My parents have loved and supported me when I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. My mom and dad are not perfect, but they have done everything possible to give me the best chance for my future. I hope whenever I am blessed with a future family, I will be even half the people they are. I love you, Mom and Dad; thank you for always believing in me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi everyone, I am Sydnee, but I go by several nicknames: Syd, squid, and sydosaurus rex, to name a few. I am a 21-year-old hairstylist and a Nashville native. Most people know me from my fantastic bowl cut as a child, which I rocked for several years (thank you, Mom). I got into the hair industry after realizing that college was not for me and fully acknowledging that I love color and hair and want to do that forever. Throughout my life, I have always been in an art club, creating things at home, and worked at an art studio for years. Color and creativity are my peace. Because of my love of color and creativity as a hairstylist, I offer all sorts of color, blonding, Brazilian blowouts, cuts, conditioning services, and extensions! I pride myself on continuing hair education and becoming a well-rounded stylist in all areas to provide the best experience for whoever is in my chair! I am most proud of my drive to continue learning and improving daily, even when things seem complicated. I want to improve my skills and knowledge and enhance all my techniques.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As a hairstylist, the first thing you are taught about marketing is building an online presence, making sure you are posting well-posed before and after, and keeping things very aesthetic. I am a very different case running my hair page; I love to post funny and out-of-the-box content that shows off my personality. I encourage showing off who you are! People love personability and seeing the “real” you! Plus, making a mix of aesthetic posts and goofy content is so much fun that it allows you to connect with your community!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is that there are endless possibilities for art! As a hairstylist, you can use several different artistic techniques to get to the same point or use a different color pattern for a different look each time! No idea or look repeats itself, so getting to feel and watch a new creative idea is the best part of being in a creative industry. Getting to surround yourself with people with the same outlook comes with amazing collaboration and new knowledge of different ideas.
