We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sxarlett Xo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sxarlett below.
Alright, Sxarlett thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
As a person i’ve always had a magnetic passion for Art in all of its forms – but music always stuck out the most. Growing up I was a really shy kid , I never put myself in situations where I’d stand out or have any sort of spot light. Back then I kind of just tried my best to blend in. It wasnt until my last year of highschool that I really started putting myself out there. I slowly started posting singing videos on my snapchat , at the time I was really into the piano so i’d post videos of myself messing around with different melodies and sounds. At school i’d go and show my closest friends things i’d recorded on some audio app on my phone and everyone would always have the same reaction “ omg I didnt know you could sing like this , why dont you post it on your actual page!” but I knew I was still way to shy to do any of that. But when I reached my Freshman year of college , it almost felt like a rebranding. Everything was so new. The outside world. I didnt know anyone . It was kind of just me going to my classes , meeting new people. People who were doing cool things that they wanted to do, without a care in the world. Then suddenly one day I went to school and it was almost like a light flickered inside of me and kind of said – and excuse my language , but F*** IT! Who cares about what anyone else has to say. At the end of the day you have to do what makes YOU happy. And if that is perusing music and putting yourself out there – even if its the most terrifying thing ever then so be it. And since then I can officially say I’ve been the most free I’ve ever felt. So I dont think I regret starting at the age I did , I was 18 years old when I put out my first song and honestly after hearing all of the feedback, Things like “ Wow your so young and talented. You have such a long way to go and you’re already off to such a great start” everything was just so reassuring. Almost like I was exactly where I needed to be. I’m a big believer in – it’ll happen when the time is right, So honestly i’m eternally grateful with myself for putting those shy feelings away and allowing myself to embark on the journey i’m on. I wouldnt change a thing!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Around the year 2019 I started going by the name Sxarlett Xo or Scarlett to my friends. Till this day I really dont know what to say when people ask me what genre of music or what box i’d insert myself into – i’d like to say i’m a pretty well rounded person. I’ve done Rnb , Rap , Pop , Hip-Hop, Reggaeton and even some Rock. I’m pretty versatile in the sense that I wouldnt really put myself in any category because I’m always down to jump into anything I can just vibe to. I’m actually currently working on an Album – I havent made the announcement yet but i’m super excited and so proud of this project just because there was a point in my life after I started perusing music where I felt like a failure. I didnt feel like any of the music I was making was good enough. When it comes to music im a perfectionist so i’m constantly super hard on myself. Covid had also hit the year after I started on my journey so going to a studio was very limited , and just also having to refind people to work with. I’m believer that when youre in a good environment, and you surround yourself with good vibes and you click with the people your working with everything just flows so much easier. In 2021 I finally fell back into the groove and had an AMAZING year after dropping my first ever EP Closure that I recorded with my good friend Soundsbymoon. That Ep was my baby – literally. It opened so many doors for me , it got me so many dope collaborations and I even did a couple of shows that helps out even more. Then later in 2022 I started recording myself from home and within 2023 I received a dm from a super dope Algerian Engineer/Artist by the name of Lil Anunnaki saying he thought I was dope and wanted to work – and its just been up from there! We’re both such creative people so we’re like always bouncing off the walls with ideas and concepts – its always such a great time when were working. Since he’s based in Algeria and i’m in New Jersey we’re constantly sending tracks back and forth like “ what do you think about its idea? Lets try this for this song ? What about this beat? “ And like I said before – when you surround yourself with people on the same type of timing as you , that have great vibes and passions like you do it literally shows in the work. I’d like to say i’m currently working on the best music of my LIFE. We’ve been working on this album for the past year so to finally be at the ends of it all is so bitter sweet and nerve wracking because its like – okay we did it.. now step two – the roll out. And anyone that does music knows the roll out is the hardest part because theres soo much that goes into music apart from the actual music! But i’m excited. My teams excited. I couldnt be any prouder to take this next step.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Around the time where Covid hit , it was super hard to find studios to go to especially because it meant meeting new people and putting my health at risk, everything was super limited. And ontop of that I didn’t have the resources available like expensive mics & equipment to just record from home to avoid all of that – UNTIL i discovered Bandlab. I swear as funny as it sounds Bandlab saved my life – and pockets! Its this super dope and resourceful app where all you need are a pair of apple headphones and you are literally able to record full blown songs. Add instruments , autotune , effects . This app literally allows creatives to make music from the comfort of your own home and I truthfully wish I would of discovered it sooner because like I said , there was a time where it was just so hard to do anything if you didnt have the proper resources. But on Bandlab , if you have a song idea and you want to do more then just record it raw – you can hop on there and drop the whole thing and the craziest part is that its amazing quality. A couple of my tracks that i’ve already put out I actually recorded on Bandlab and i’ve even had people ask me where I go to record – Can you just imagine everyones face when i pulled out my apple headphones from my back pocket ? They just couldnt believe it. Something so simple yet effective. I’ve put on so many of my friends onto Bandlab and its helped them so much aswell. And if you want to get super official with it – you can go out and purchase yourself a real recording mic and the connections needed – i’ve literally had friends produce full albums JUST from this app. So no this isnt an ad nor am I sponsored haha but get it! Do it – trust me , especially to anyone out there that doesnt know where to go or where to start? Bandlab .
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel like we all just need to be more compassionate with one another. Now a days as a society , I feel like everyone is so worried about being the best that most people dont care who they have to step on to get there. We as a community LITERALLY have the power to make eachother famous! To help each other thrive! To build each other up! But like I said everyone is so stuck on being the best or not showing love to the left – because they want to only support the right – do you get what I mean ? Theres just so much love to go around but no one wants to give until they see you doing hreat things . Its like a domino effect. No one wants to be the one to set the first domino off – until someone does and there they all go . I know so many slept on Artists from my town/city , people that I’d say are even BETTER then most people that are on the charts. But its like now a days , if youre not already on top or you already have that support system its truthfully hard being a upcoming artist. So we need to do better as a community. Support your local artists! Even the biggest of names started small ; and never forget, every penny counts to make that dollar.
