Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Swetha Tandri. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Swetha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
It’s been 3 years since I started my business, Melodies for Math, but the idea has been intertwined in my life story since the beginning :)
From a very young age, I’ve always loved music and math. I first combined the two when I was in 7th grade and chose to write a parody for an algebra project! It got over 1000 views, and I felt motivated to make more. I wrote my first original song in grade 8, but that was about history. I wanted to continue, but things sort of fell apart when I reached high school.
When I was out of the country in the beginning of March 2020, I decided I finally felt ready to take action on this idea of writing my own educational songs, but specifically for math, as math was not taught in an engaging and fun way and I wanted to change that. On March 10th, I started writing a 50 second song about an introduction to calculus/limits (the math class I was taking at the time) and uploaded it to YouTube! For a while after that, I uploaded to YouTube once a week, and also posted snippets to Instagram. I knew nothing about how to grow on social media, so nothing substantial happened in terms of gaining an audience, but I created a LOT of material, and learned a lot about myself as a founder and leader.
With the encouragement of my mentor, Haley Hoffman Smith, I decided to start posting on tiktok in June 2021 and really have fun with it. I posted DAILY and blew up in July of 2021. Now I have almost 70K followers on @melodiesformath on tiktok, as well as 8.16K on YouTube, 5.8K on Instagram, and 326 on Facebook. I registered as an LLC in October of 2022 and currently make money doing influencer partnerships, content/course creation for Ed-tech companies, individual and group tutoring (working on promoting and talking to more clients), and hopefully soon YouTube ad revenue.

Swetha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Melodies for Math is an ed-tech company that explains math through songs. As a student and someone who loves music and writing songs, I love making learning math more fun on social media and through the services I provide.
As a current computer science student at the University of Texas, I see coding and math as superpowers which we can use to make our world better. Math is truly the language of our universe, but the way that it is currently being taught can cause students to turn away from it/develop math anxiety and blocks. I aim to help them get rid of these blocks to use math as a tool to enact positive change in their communities.
Here are the services I provide:
A membership cohort(for students and parents) which provides personalized fun engaging resources based on need, group coaching calls, office hours, + more in order to effectively minimize math anxiety and increase math understanding and confidence. A 3 month tutoring program called SONGIFY MATH!: This program aims to teach math through songs in a 1 on 1 setting. This is an online program like the membership and has 1 session every week. You can choose from 2 types of sessions: Teach and Write. In a teach session, I would teach a specific concept of math (the what, why, and the how) through songs and other engaging methods. In a write session, I will help the student create their own math song/game plan for a specific topic so they can recall and apply concepts on a test and other instances!

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Back in January 2022, I made a big investment by purchasing a year long course membership called Seven Figure Influencer by Gwen Lane. It was a $6000 course and at the time, I was just starting out with making business revenue, and I was a full time college student. I did have a job, but I was worried at times if I would be able to pay the monthly installments and still have money left over for other expenses. I found myself pitching to brands constantly, feeling super worried that I might not get results. But through a miracle I got my first $2K sale in the end of January, and that gave me even more confidence that my dreams were possible. I ended up making a 2.5x ROI.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I read a book recently called A Happy Pocket Full of Money, and that was SUPER helpful for me regarding mindset, picturing my dream life, and attracting abundance. My favorite podcasts are Big Conversations by Haley Hoffman Smith and The Native Digital + Native Analog show by Hannah Grady Williams.
