We were lucky to catch up with Sweet May’s Desserts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sweet May’s Desserts thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Our parents taught us to treat others the way we want to be treated and to always be honest and respectful. Both mom and dad were kind-hearted and giving and would always go the extra mile to help anyone. They instilled a foundation of genuine love that exudes into our love for baking and making sure that our customers are satisfied. These teachings go a long way no matter what line of business you are in.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
We are twin business owners that began baking with mom as young girls and our business is named after her, “Sweet May’s Desserts”. Mom was the family baker that provided desserts for family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. She absolutely loved being in the kitchen and baking. It bought her so much joy. Our goal is to capture that same love and joy by creating a masterpiece that will allow other families to make great memories of their own.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, this definitely started as a side hustle and turned into a full time business, but because we love doing it so much it’s hard to call it a side hustle. It’s more of a passion. If passion is present, people tend to be more resilient when encountering obstacles. When you’re passionate about what you do, you tend to have a more positive outlook when the ups and downs of entrepreneurship occur. Deciding to make this a full time business was a hard decision, but it is definitely a very rewarding decision. If we had to do it all over again we wouldn’t change a thing.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been consistency and quality. Both of these attributes produce word of mouth clients. With this, we have the joy of making desserts for repeat customers over and over again, which also builds great relationships.
