We recently connected with Swee Ling Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Swee Ling thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Definitely designing and constructing my sister’s wedding dress. We are extremely close and I probably know her better than she knows herself. I wanted to do something special and felt so honored I was able to do it! I got very fortunate that she was so easy going with the whole process and basically let me do whatever I wanted in all aspects from sketching the design, to choosing the fabrics, and adding the final touches because she trusted me so well. It ended up being a surprise to both her and my mom at her final fitting just a few weeks before her wedding. We were all crying happy tears and their reaction is something that will stay with me forever. It meant so much to me!
Swee Ling, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello I have been independently working as a Seamstress and Bridal Designer since 2017. Over the years I have gained experience in Bridal Design, Pattern Draping, Drafting & Construction, Alterations, and specific custom needs. I spent an internship with Karen Hendrix Couture in Nashville, TN and worked as the Seamstress/ Alterations Specialist at Couture By Tess Bridal in Cookeville, TN which has progressively given me experience with Luxury High Fashion Gowns, Intricate Designs, & Technique. I work specifically with Bridal, Prom & Pageant Gowns.
I also really appreciate beauty in design. I especially pay attention to and get inspiration from how a gown drapes, the intricate details, the lines of the pattern and how it’s sewn together. I love creating and working with my hands and learn a lot through experience in doing so.
I am very meticulous and passionate about what I do. I care a lot about the clients that I work with and often still think about how I can help make their big day seamless and perfect even well after our last fitting together.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think I have built a pretty good reputation for quality in sewing with fine detail and strong work ethic, but I credit a huge portion of my growing success from my local community. When I first started my business, everyone has been nothing short of welcoming and encouraging. Word of mouth, sharing posts, commenting, reviews and recommendations has helped tremendously. Year after year as I continue to grow in experience and skill, I am still always met with abundance of love and support. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a warm and uplifting community.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
What’s most rewarding for me is seeing the clients that I work with happy and the friendships that I’ve come to gain from it as well! Often I get to know them on a personal level and I am very critical of myself and always want to do the very best I can. Not only for me, but for them to feel the most beautiful and confident about themselves too. It always gives me a feeling of accomplishment and it means as much to me as it does to them. Nothing beats when they look at themselves in the mirror on their final fitting and they have that radiant smile and you can tell they can’t wait for their special day. I’ll never get tired of it. It’s my most favorite part!
I also love coming up with different ideas for custom work and being able to create something that reflects their personality. I think it’s so fun and more meaningful to create something uniquely designed just for them! I especially love when it’s something I haven’t particularly done yet so not only are they satisfied with how it turned out, but I did it well and I learned a new skill or technique that I can add to my repertoire for future projects!
