We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Swain McCaughrin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Swain, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I began my creative path by experimenting and exploring various subject matter and mediums for no other reason than it was something I enjoyed. I just kept creating and realized that I had a lifetime of art I wanted to create. Eventually all other work fell to the side and I was forging ahead professionally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multi-disciplinary artist working with paper, oils, and acrylics. I also make wearable sculptures and jewelry through my brand, MISASSEMBLED.
I love to travel, and a primary source of inspiration for my artwork is the visual and energetic aspects of city environments. Observing the interplay of structure and chaos, I work in series to respond to the impact of new locations. Each series is a record of time that documents shifts in rhythm and responses to new stimuli. I am currently expanding my paper wall sculpture series and my latest work explores tessellation through origami forms, which started during my time in Dallas, Texas.
My latest jewelry collection explores the emergence of order and patterns from complex systems. By combining innovative technology with traditional craft, I created a collection of wearable pyramid variations that reflect elegance and strength through sharp angles and precise lines.
Whether it’s painting, jewelry, or something custom – I love creating art that people enjoy and feel like I’ve accomplished what I’ve set out to do when someone is affected by my work. It keeps me going.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to offer a moment of beauty in this often chaotic and overwhelming world. Even if just a glance reflects back inspiration, beauty, delight or anything positive, I feel my artwork is fulfilling its intention.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is connecting with people. It’s almost like a secret language – when someone “gets” my work. I feel a mutual understanding that can’t be communicated in any other way.
