We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Svetlana Vasina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Svetlana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Starting my creative career early has been a huge advantage for me. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, and my talent was recognized at age 5 when my mother enrolled me in an art class. Growing up in a small village in Russia without any artists in the family, that early exposure to art sparked my passion for it.
After school, I went to university. During this time, I began participating in group exhibitions across Russia, showing my works to an audience.
Art has become integral to who I am, allowing me to express my unique perspective and connect with others through visual storytelling. Drawing from my early experiences and the skills I developed throughout my journey, I can tell my artistic vision through various mediums.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m grateful for starting my creative career early—it helped me discover my passion, develop my skills, and shape the artist I am today. I wouldn’t change a thing about this fulfilling and rewarding path.
Svetlana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Design and Applied Arts in 2017, where I specialized in design. After completing my studies, I started my career as an illustrator, which eventually led me to the role of an art director. During the challenging times of the pandemic in 2020, I found inspiration in digital art. I began drawing using my iPad for clients, and this marked the beginning of my journey into digital illustration.
As an illustrator, I specialize in creating vector graphics for clients from around the globe. Whether it’s designing illustrations for various projects, websites, or even books, I am proud of bringing concepts and ideas to life through my art.
As a visual artist, I have a special love for oil and acrylic painting. My artwork has been shown in galleries worldwide, and I’ve been honored to receive several awards for my paintings.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To better support artists and creatives, our society should be more open and break down barriers. An essential step is prioritizing accessible and quality art education from a young age. Also, cultural exchange programs can allow artists to shine internationally and connect with audiences and experiences. I would like to have this opportunity at the beginning of my career.
