We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Svetlana Pustova a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Svetlana , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I remember when I was 14 years old, I was watching Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel (funny, I know) and I just couldn’t stop. I felt so drawn to the character, the story line, and eventually the actress herself. So, I investigated the serie, the filming, the backstage stories. I just wanted to find out as much as I could. I wanted to understand how it all worked. That was when I decided that I wanted to do the same, and that was acting.
Svetlana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m from Russia but currently I live in Mexico. Basically, I’ve been half of my life in Russia and half in Mexico which totally adopted me. I remember when I was in 1st grade in school, we usually had these theatrical plays and we had to participate, all of us. And let me tell you, I’m a shy person, even though you might think that everybody who chooses their acting path might be extrovert, well, I’m not.
With that said, I performed in school, which was a challenge for me, and I don’t remember having main roles and being the center of it, you know, but I enjoyed it! Then one time, in my hometown, I saw that famous actress. I just couldn’t believe that she was there, so close to me! By that time, I was doing another play in school I which the kids weren’t that nice to me, ‘cause most of them were rich and I wasn’t, so when I was that actress, for me it was like a spark of hope and inspiration.
Time went by, I totally forgot about that moment and we moved to Mexico. So, there was me watching Lizzie McGuire on TV and realizing I wanted to be an actress. I decided to search for schools in Mexico that offered that career. I wanted to be a pro! I found CEA (Centro de Educación Artística) which offered 3 years acting career. The only issue was that I should be 18 years old, but I only had 16. That didn’t stop me though, I auditioned! It was a 3 day trial where they met around 9k people and at the end only 50 got the spot. Long story short, I did it! They chose me!
Watching myself on TV was such a surreal moment! I just couldn’t believe I was there! This accomplishment for me was a reminder that I could do it. It was remembering all my doubts, fears, criticism from others, and of course, that moment when I saw this famous actress totally resonated inside of me.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
What society can definitely do is create a space where artists can meet other artists, meet producers, movie directors, casting directors, managers. An event that also encourages the thriving actors to learn more about auditions, public relations, get insights, tips, and more. It would be amazing to have this space as an opportunity to discover new talent for a production and connect with other actors for artists.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Usually, when people think that being an actor is an easy way out in life, and that’s it’s so easy. You just stand there and pretend, and that’s all. Actually, when people find out I’m an actress, their response is “Can you cry?” Lol Like acting is all about crying! What I like most about this career is how challenging it can be! One day you’re a college student, another you’re a spy, then a superhero, a mother who lost a child, a twin figuring out a lie, a doctor struggling with his own health, a ninja, a cook, and I can go on! It’s just amazing how you can be all, but again you have to prepare A LOT to get to know about each character and eventually bring them to life.
When you watch a movie or a serie you want to get involved and life with a character, instead of thinking “oh, I don’t believe this actor…”
