We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Svetlana Koval. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Svetlana below.
Svetlana , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
I think it is very difficult for a creative person to find an ideal boss , except to be one for yourself. An artist is constantly busy observing and thinking about the ideas of his paintings. This is an important inner job. Every morning I wake up and in my mind I list the things that need to be done urgently, which can be postponed, I plan the time spent on this and the remaining time. – this is the time of painting. The happiest days are when from 8 am you can only do painting.

Svetlana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Svetlana Koval. I am an artist who paints oil paintings mostly genre scenes and landscapes. My style is fantastic realism. I have participated in many exhibitions in Lancaster and Redding County. I was a prize winner in the exhibitions of Goggleworks gallery and the Lancaster Art Museum. In my paintings I try to express the feeling of beauty of inner and surrounding life in all its manifestations. I talk about my experiences and thoughts through various images: natural phenomena, interaction of human and the surrounding world.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I am from Russia, Siberia. I have been drawing since childhood. My parents, seeing my constant desire to paint, sent me to study at Art school. The school helped me grow not only as an artist but also as a person. For several years I collaborated with a local gallery. Nine years ago I came to USA and saw a slightly different art market. I took part in various exhibitions and art festivals, where I sold my paintings. For me, it was a great happiness to feel the need for my creativity.
During the lockdown period, I lost many connections. The war between Russia and Ukraine (my husband is from Ukraine) morally undermined my inner strength. I got a job not related to painting.
At the moment, I am trying to revive in myself that joy and wonder from contemplating life. Because it is the source of my creativity. I think I am succeeding, because I am again at the easel.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the world differently, not as a simple user, but as a researcher discovering the essence and conveying it on canvas. It is alway A very exciting process.
