We recently connected with Suzy Hendrix and have shared our conversation below.
Suzy, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects is South City. Located in Memphis TN, this area was ground zero for the civil rights movement in Memphis. I began the project with deep research into the history of the area. Many musicians, artists, and civil rights leaders hail from this neighborhood. Learning this gave me even more of a connection to the neighborhood and the folks that this art honors. My sculptures honor their past in symbolism. I grew up in a church in the area, so it was already special to me!

Suzy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
While I started my career as a musician, I have always been drawn to visual art as well.
I consider travel to be my muse, and I spent over a decade touring the world with bands as a saxophonist. Mostly living in France and Japan, my return to the states was very challenging. You can imagine the culture shock of leaving Paris France for Memphis!
I soon felt the need to move away from music due to the toxic lifestyle. I started my new life as a stained-glass artist. I felt it was a way to earn a living and also be creative. I found that I enjoy collaborating with clients on decorative art installations. Collaborations allowed me to expand my horizons as an artist and learn new styles and techniques.
I also create 2D and 3D art for exhibition and sale. Much of my art is related to architectural styles throughout the ages. I currently am working on my “Architectural Reliquaries” series as well as a few public art projects.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love seeing my art out in the world! It’s such a great feeling to take a sketch of a concept and make it happen. I am currently working on a sculpture park in a lot I purchased, and it has been a great adventure!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have often focused on underserved communities who truly need more beauty in their environment. I often hire apprentices from the communities I work in as a way to enable young people to follow their creative path.
That said, I also enjoy creating decorative arts for homes and businesses. This is also fulfilling as we have the budget to explore options! I have created decorative screens, sculptural mailboxes, windows and walls. I love the technical challenge each project brings.
