We were lucky to catch up with Suzy Fielders recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Suzy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think self-motivation and organization are two extremely important traits to have if you want to be successful. People often say to me “I don’t know how you do all you do” (‘all’ being – self-employment, parenthood of an infant and teenage daughter, homeschool my teenager, and fit in being a wife & friend in there too). I’ve often pondered this statement and wondered how do I manage it all. Some days are certainly much harder than others. But, those two traits are what have always gotten me through those harder times. Self-motivation is imperative to success. After all, if you can’t push yourself to want it, who will? You need to be able to motivate yourself to keep moving forward, even when times are tough or you feel you can’t.
Organization is how you stay on track and don’t let anything slip. From calendars to strategies, you need to keep it all organized in a way that makes sense for you.
Suzy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Psychology from Coker College (now called Coker University) and my Master of Arts in Communication Studies. Both lead me into various jobs in the marketing industry. While I enjoyed marketing, I never felt it was my passion. Except, when it came to writing copy for various marketing projects. In 2011, I had some digital freelance writing opportunities come my way. I knew once I started those that writing was my passion. Over the years I took on more and more freelance writing jobs, from digital to print. Until in January 2021, I had built up enough to branch out on my own as a content marketer and writer. It took a decade to get to this point but it was so worth it!
My writing services include Search Engine Optimized (SEO) content (including blogs and webpages), resumes, press releases, biographies, social media copy, ad copy, magazine articles, digital articles, and really any writing a business or publication might need.
I always ask a ton of questions – whether in interviewing a subject or a business I’m writing for – this helps me really understand what I need to write about. I listen, and that is what sets me apart. You’d be surprised how much content presents itself if you just listen instead of talking and pushing the conversation a certain direction.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Between 2008 and 2010 I was working full-time, in school full-time to get my master’s degree, and a single parent of at the time a 2-4 year-old daughter. There were times I absolutely felt like giving up on earning that degree, but my self-motivation and personal resilience always reminded me to not give up. It was tough, but gaining that degree in May 2010 was such a proud accomplishment.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2019, I had been at a marketing agency for almost a year and a half. While I loved the company I worked for and my boss, I was so burned out on the marketing industry. In today’s digital world, almost anyone seemed to think they knew everything about marketing even though it took me years of education and experience to get where I was. It was beyond frustrating and I knew I needed a change of pace. One of our clients was a trampoline park who happened to be looking for a new General Manager at one of their locations. While it was a bit of a pay cut, I decided to take the leap and that job. It offered me new found flexibility in my schedule, was fun (those employees and the owners were just the best to work with!), and through that job I ended up meeting the man who is now my husband. The pandemic drastically changed the entertainment industry, like a trampoline park, so it pushed me into a further pivot – which is now being a self-employed writer and content marketer.
