Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Suzette Munson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Suzette, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
Our business began after our first trip to Africa. What I had grown-up thinking of Africa wasn’t exactly accurate but one thing was for sure. There was a huge need. After returning home when my babies were only one year and three years old. I started to have a repetitive dream. This repetitive dream came with a name and numbers which later I realize was a double meaning for the name of my company and a Bible verse. Psalm 41:1-4. Look it up! I was already working full-time at our other business called Saddleback Leather, but I quickly realize God was telling me to start a retail business where we gave away 100% of our profits, but I needed the right person to come alongside me. That was a no-brainer for me because I needed someone who I knew would be just as passionate about what we were doing as I was. I invited my sister Tina to come with me to Africa and she was sold and quit her job working at Saddleback to come over full-time with me at Love 41.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a high-end leather goods company with a 41 year warranty. We gave 100% of our profits away to help the less fortunate locally here in the United States as well as in central Mexico where we have our own high-quality American school that is bilingual and in Rwanda Africa. We also design and produce our own leather goods at our own factory in central Mexico, which allows us to have better control of the quality and outcome. High-quality is super important to us. We often say we are a people company, cleverly disguised as a leather goods company.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I think everyone can relate to the fact that we survived not only Covid but many other times so we thought we would have to close our doors. I remember our financial advisor and account in telling us that we had 40 days before we lost everything. I remember My Husband and I talking about this and telling our kids about it and to this day my son does have some trauma from that, but regardless it was a learning lesson for all of us. First of all we got on our knees. We pray we pray we pray and I did not stress about it. I felt like if God wants us to continue with this then I fully trust that it will somehow not close in 40 days. My Husband and I discussed it and decided we were not gonna stress about it and it got decided to have this goes down. I would bring us something eventually. The 40th day came and somehow we were still making payroll even though it made no sense on the books whatsoever. Our financial advisor and Accountant was dumbfounded, but we knew it was supernatural.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
High quality and honesty and treating our customers excellently. We have the best of the best when it comes to each of these things and it keeps our customers loyal and more like family.
