We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suzanne Culberg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suzanne below.
Suzanne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I started a daily podcast (yes daily! there’s the first difference).
Within 7 weeks of launch it reached the top 10% of Global podcasts.
I created it, on my terms.
*There is NO jingle, intro, outro, annoying music that people just tend to skip over anyway.
*There are NO show notes, or any links beyond my website.
*I only do single take recordings, with NO editing.
*I keep the episodes short, averaging 9 minutes, the range is 5-15 minutes.
*I have a mixture of guest and solo episodes.
*When I do bring on guests we get straight to the topic, I don’t spend half the episode reading their bio or recounting how we met.
*I upload the video to YouTube and the audio is available on most podcast platforms.
Suzanne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I call myself the accidental entrepreneur, I started a FB page to document my personal weight loss journey, I’ve released 78 kilograms (171 pounds – yes an entire person). From there I did a coaching certification and originally coached weight loss mindset. What I found with the majority of my clients is that they were overweight because they over-gave. And what many over-givers have in common is poor boundaries, as they say yes to everyone else and no to themselves ALLLLLL day, and then wonder why they stay up late binge watching netflix and over eating.
SO my business morphed and I rebranded last year to the Nope Coach, and I help women say No without feeling like a b*tch.
Ever since I was a kid, I always did what others needed or expected of me.
I said ‘yes’ to their requests, their ideas of beauty, their ideas of success.
One day I looked up and realised I didn’t know who I was anymore.
I was constantly in survival mode, my body and mind worn to shreds.
That was the first day I said “NOPE!”
It took a lot (I mean a fuckton) of hard work to find myself again.
It took a lot of NOPEs: some scary as hell, others joyous beyond belief.
After I got my life back into my own hands, I studied, got certified, and became a Nope Coach for others.
I’m on a mission to make boundaries normal and celebrated.
We should be saying NOPE more often.
WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE BEFORE…MANY TIMES.
Stuffing your pantry with items you don’t really like because they’re ‘superfoods.’
Making a 10-item goal list and telling yourself you’ll have it all done in two weeks.
Joining a boot camp or retreat to finally get your shit together…maybe?
Here’s the annoying truth: there is no quick fix to taking care of yourself and feeling better.
That bubble definitely needed to be burst.
Massive overhauls are usually a direct line to disappointment.
I created Why W8? a group coaching program where my clients learn how even the smallest of actions leads to lasting changes, but no changes can be made without badass boundaries.
Healthy boundaries allow you to Get The Shit Done You Want To Get Done
WE ARE, AT ALL TIMES, BOTH TOTALLY BRILLIANT AND A TOTAL MESS.
What we most need is a compass, a set of practices, to help us navigate the ever-changing emotional landscape of that big messy thing we call ‘life.’
Why W8?is your opportunity to generate the self-compassion and self-awareness you need in order to heal. As your coach, I’ll be a customised-to-your-needs cocktail of empathy, zero-excuses butt-kicking, and humour.
You’re Not Alone, Promise
HERE’S THE THING—DOING ‘THE WORK’ ALONE ISN’T GONNA GET YOU ANYWHERE.
Momentum happens in a community, a community where you can actually be yourself and stop pretending to be perfect all the time.
It takes a village to remind us all that we’re doing better than we think we are.
We can all encourage and support each other.
Meet and connect with others who are working on their NOPE powers.
People who struggle with boundaries with themselves and with their families.
People who have also spent a long time with the heavy weight of negative self-talk.
You already have the capacity and ability.
Why W8? gives you the space and the community.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Originally I launched Why W8? as a membership. I thought with ongoing access that would be the best way to support my clients. What I found was that people struggled to leave when they felt complete, and what should have been a glorious celebration when they felt complete in the container, often turned into a messy divorce when they had stayed too long.
I pivoted my business model from a membership with ongoing monthly access to a program with a set start date and finish date. Why W8? is now taught in rounds. Clients are invited to rejoin for future rounds (and many do), but some feel complete after one round, and some choose to sit a round or two out.
I LOVE this model so much more, as it allows clients flexibility to step in and out of the container as they see fit. There is no ongoing direct debits, and there is no FOMO when their time is up. At the end of each round there is a celebration and we embrace JOMO (joy of missing out) if people feel complete.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Before I launched Why W8? which is a group program. I originally coached clients 1:1.
I did not have clear boundaries nor did I convey clearly the value difference between 1:1 and my group.
As a result, almost ALL of my 1:1 clients decided to discontinue 1:1 and do my group instead. Which hamstringed my income. Also, because I didn’t have clear boundaries, I still continued to coach via voxer / messenger, and deliver a 1:1 experience to these clients at the group rate.
I burnt out hard!
I was very fortunate to have my husband’s income to support our family through this time.
It’s another reason I ended up re-niching and teaching boundaries, because I learnt SO much from this experience.
