We were lucky to catch up with Suyin Nunez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Suyin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How has Covid changed your business model?
Initially since I live in the United States, I work in a salon for 4 years, I loved it, I love serving the public and being able to change lives, after the covid arrived many people no longer felt comfortable being in one place for a long time with many people around and also people coming and going, so I had the good fortune to buy a house and the idea of creating a totally personalized hairdressing studio with all the amenities of a salon but being able to attend person to person was born, so I already have 8 months working in this way and it has been a total success, I believe that something good can always come out of something bad. The covid definitely changed my way of working and seeing life and I am super grateful to the people who follow me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
For those who would like to know a little more about me, my real name is suyin, everyone calls me susy because of how complicated it is sometimes, I am from Maracaibo-Venezuela but for those who know me my culture is not 100% Maracucha, I emigrated in In 2015 I went to Buenos Aires Argentina with the purpose of studying Hairdressing since I had previously studied colorimetry at the Salvador Academy in Venezuela, that moment opened my mind since I had always liked the subject of beauty. In 2018 I decided to emigrate again, in this state it was Florida since the love of my life was here and I needed to meet him again, from the moment I came to work in a hairdressing salon and to learn how this type of business is managed in the United States, since each country is different and there are extensive work structures.
My main career is Industrial Engineering, a profession that helped me a lot for who I am today. I believe that to run any business you must have a broad level of study. In 2022 I decided to become independent but not any independence to set up a hairdresser since in this case I wanted to do it in my case, the odyssey of being able to get all the permits to be able to set up a hairdresser in my house that everyone loves since it has all the amenities of one but with a totally personalized service and which takes the name of Studio Hairstylistsusy, in the same my strengths in this area is color, I love changing the pigmentation of the hair, styling it, giving it shape, so I offer styling services for ladies and gentlemen, cuts, hairstyles, stem cells, keratins, botox and of course everything in color, color corrections and new trends such as balayage, hightlights and much more.
I am very proud of what I do and of the people who follow me every day and who always recommend my name to all those people who need it. I am building my own brand to be an inspiration for many people who are starting out in this area. We no longer want that room full of people, we want to pay for a service in which we feel full.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
To grow a clientele, the best thing is to do a good job, good work and good service sell themselves, the best marketing there is is a recommendation from person to person, and when you see a good job on the street many times you ask who did it to you.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Since I was a child I had wanted to visit the United States, something that my parents did not care much about since they had always been regulars visiting Europe since my grandmother is Dutch, after I reached the age of majority I decided to go alone to get the American visa to be able to Visit the United States on vacation, I tried 3 times and it was rejected, you can imagine how I was crying because I couldn’t fulfill that dream I had. But everything in life has a moment and a place, I decide to travel to Argentina to study, buy my ticket to travel in 1 month, I thought I’m going to try the visa for the last time, finally it was approved, I finally visited the United States of vacations and after a while I returned from vacations and because of political issues in my country I decided to seek asylum here. It was the best decision since it is known that the issue of immigration in the United States is super complicated and after 2 years they approved my asylum and I became an American resident. I feel like it’s a story of resilience and very emotional that we should never stop when we really want something.
