We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suvojit Mukherjee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suvojit below.
Hi Suvojit, thanks for joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Everyone thinks being a model or entrepreneur is easy. But the truth is, this is hard as every other career in the world.
Modelling is not so rosy as it seems like. There are different kinds of people in the fashion industry. The fashion industry can take you to the top, and also can drop you down in the blink of an eye. There is a lot of favoritism and racism in the industry. Its sad, but true. As a brown model, I have faced a lot of racism myself. As browns, we are not selected very often by the fashion designers. I will say it bluntly, mostly fair skinned people are preferred. Apart from racism, people also try to take advantage of your skill by making you work for them for free. I faced all of these issues myself, which has definitely helped me to grow. One thing I have learnt is that, if you are a model, you need to be mentally very strong to deal with failures, disappointments and criticism.
I am an entrepreneur as well. I have my event planning organization Dipra event Planners. With regards to the event planning as well, I have faced a lot of rejections and criticism. Sometimes, everything becomes stagnant and it feels like giving up! Criticism and back-biting makes me demotivated at times! Dipra event planners is currently planning a Halloween glow party in Calgary. Calgary is not a big city and hence, there are limited resources and opportunities, which is a big challenge! If it’s not the best, it will not shine through. Hopefully, I will be able to rise over all challenges and succeed in this business career.

Suvojit, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started modelling professionally when I walked for an Indian traditional wear brand in Canada back in 2019. The fashion show was a hit and my modelling career kicked off. Soon, I got into an agency with lots of hopes and aspirations. I did few photoshoots after joining them but due to internal politics, I left the agency and started freelancing. I started getting many offers when I started freelancing. My first good break was being a cover boy for Devon and Lang- line of undergarments. The career took off after that. I got published in various internal magazines like Hon, Volant, artofportait etc. I got the chance of walking for various designers in prestigious fashion events like Western Canada Fashion Week ,Vancouver Fashion week, African Fashion Week and many others. I did ad-shoots and commercials with Hero Images, Calgary tourism, Alberta institute of chiropractors, Calgary zoological society, Taco Time Canada, Bow Valley College, Bottle Depot to name a few. My photos even got published in the prestigious Avenue magazine of Calgary.
Instagram is an important aspect of my life. I channel all my photoshoots, lifestyle, and fashion experiences through Instagram posts, reels and stories. Most often, I receive messages from people saying that my stories have affected them in a positive manner. It’s those times that I really feel special.
Recently, I have started my event planning organization Dipra Event Planners., Me and my business partner Zaheen are equally managing this. We are one stop shop who provides everything including venue, decorations, hair makeup artists, photographer, videographer, dance choreographer, DJ and even food choices. We specialize in organizing marriage, reception, fashion shows and birthday parties. We have organized an Indian fashion show recently, which was highly appreciated.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I guess the most important aspect that the society needs to understand is fair payment. Sometimes, people ask us to help them for free! I think as an artist or creative or entreprenur, its fair to expect some renumeration with respect to our effort and time as this is our source of income.
As an entrepreneur, I also have the same thoughts. People should consider the standard or value of the service while investing. People always tend to move towards low monetary value which doesn’t always support good standards. Hence, its important for all to understand the service and the standards before investing.
Together, we can create a thriving ecosystem.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal of my journey is to stay happy and bring happiness in people’s lives.
As a model, I always want to bring my best. I do ad shoots and commercials. In those, I always try to showcase the product
in the best way possible which can bring happiness in the face of the product owner. That is the only thing that fills my heart with content and inspires me to perform better and better each day.
As an entrepreneur also, I try to give my best in anything I organize. The fashion show we organized was a hit, which filled my heart with joy. When a client or a person is availing my service, they are putting their trust on me. If I am able to deliver as per their expectation, that can be the best feeling in the world. Organizing events in the most appropriate manner gives me hundred percent satisfaction which provides me with the necessary fuel to move forward.
