We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suthernbreed. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suthernbreed below.
Hi Suthernbreed, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I ever performed on stage. It was an open mic known as “The Scene” at The Billiards Club. It was the first time I realized that people genuinely enjoyed my music and it was the birth of a plethora of networking opportunities and authentic connections that I still share til this day. I’m forever in debted to the guys at what was then Roman Empire for that platform and all the connections I made there.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a producer/artist and I now have a small clothing business I’m building on. I made my first beats on the PlayStation 2 game Funk Master Flex’s Digital Hitz Factory. Me and my brother from another Jay used to record ourselves on a tape recorder in his living room or at his kitchen table, I was in NC at the time. When I came back home to Mobile is when I was first introduced to FL studio. My first few beats were literally remakes of beats I had done on the PS2 initially. My first experience with professional recording came from my homeboy randomly asking me to record a mixtape with him one day and I’ve been in love ever since. I’m most proud of how I started from a netbook to now having an in home studio space and being able to create at will while being fully independent and free. I started my production company Suthernbreed Productions LLC a few years ago and turned my main focus to production in all facets being that music is a part of almost every aspect of life. I want to produce in any and every way. One of my new found ventures is the start of the clothing line. It simply started from me making my own shirts and hats with my logo to wear for myself. A few friends randomly took interest and all of a sudden I found new love and passion in another creative space, design. I started by selling a few hats and tees with embroidered logos. In the blink of an eye. I had an e-commerce onlinestore and a Cricut at home so I could create designs and upload them to my print-on-demand sites as well as bring the designs to life from the comfort of my home. “COOL” has always been an adlib of mine that just stuck with me because of my demeanor and music tone. Now it’s one of the driving forces of my clothing brand, Feel The Breeze Clothing which was always one of my slogans/catch phrases, and has taken on new meaning…C..reating O..wnership thru O..riginality and L..eadership.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Creating something that strangers love just as much as I do and connecting in a way that we would not have if not for that particular piece of art. Whether that be with a song or graphic tee it’s a beautiful feeling.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The goal is to build an empire and brand that is timeless and can be passed on to my kids.
