We were lucky to catch up with Susy & Cristy Vazquez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Susy & Cristy, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
We truly believe that everyone is special and therefore kind in the process of creating our pieces of chocolate.
For us, every customer that takes the time to stop by our booth at the Markets, Pop up shows or that buys our products online or at the retail stores, is showing a gesture of kindness that we really appreciate and make our days special.
They get interested in our story, in our process of making chocolate and are amazed of what we do; it has been really an amazing experience to get to know each one of them, regardless of if they become a buyer or remain as potential future buyers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Migaloo Chocolatier was born from the heart of a dream that becomes true in every piece of our fine creations. It was 3 years ago when Cristy, one of the co-owners decided to follow her late husband’s dream and invited her sister Susy to start from scratch together.
Migaloo means spirit or soul in Australian Aboriginal Culture. Inspired by a special soul, Migaloo Chocolatier is here to create chocolates that lift the spirits.
We loved the idea of transforming our basic element -CHOCOLATE- into blissful creations that will bring contentment and harmony to our lives and to everyone who tries them.
We have three specialties:
Truffles
Spreadable Gourmet Chocolate
Migaloo Marbles (coated almonds, coffee beans & goldenberries)
Our processes of making chocolate are 100% handmade and we are proud of doing so. We are confident that our customers will feel the care and love we put into each one of them.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
Everyone in the Chocolate industry knows that shipping our creations during the summer season is challenging, especially when you’re based in Texas.
We are thrilled with a new project we’ve been working on for the past months and are proud to announce that today is the day we’ve sent our first shipment to Amazon.
We’ve partnered with a team who specializes in helping small businesses grow in this platform and in our case, to reach out to more chocolate passionates across the US with a potential of becoming not just chocoholics but Migalooer’s.
It has been an exciting learning process and feel really enthusiastic about it. So now, you can find us at Amazon as well.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When you are a small business owner, you start with a business plan which is an important and helpful guide that everyone needs.
However, with the current supply chain situation, uncertainty and our growing projects, we’ve needed to invest in larger quantities of supplies, included but not limited to chocolate to ensure we maintain the high quality of what we offer. This has led us to struggle with cash flow and it has been challenging to find strategies to keep the boat afloat and still growing.
