We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Susie Schiering a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Susie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I was the youngest of 6 and also was born when my parents were 41 and 43. The sibling closest in age to me at the time was 10. The first thing my parents did right was to tell me I was a pleasant surprise. I never felt like a mistake, unwanted or a burden. I felt loved and cherished. My parents spent time with me even when there were so may other kids in their crazy teen years.
When I got to be a teen, my dad hired me on at his business. He was an entrepreneur. He liked opportunities. He taught me to be a go-getter and risk taker. He also (at the time I thought it was weird) told me to look in the mirror and tell myself I was beautiful each day. This was in the 80’s so way before all the popular personal development we have now. He was ahead of his time!
My mother was my best friend. She took me everywhere with her when I was little. I learned from her compassion and empathy as each Sunday my siblings and I would see a parade of foster children brought into our home. She also had a soft spot for small dogs and rescued many from the Humane Society. My mother was a Suicide Prevention line volunteer and gave of her time to other mothers who were experiencing Postpartum Depression. She also was a Master Gardener so I learned patience and strategy from her too.
I was very fortunate in the parent department and they helped shape me into the person I am today!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
New Year’s Eve 2004, I woke up and found a lump under my arm and at that moment I knew my life had changed forever. At the time, I had three children 4 and under, the youngest being 3 months old. My husband was working 60 hours a week so I could be a stay at home mom and this health crisis put a strain on our situation. Luckily, we made it through 2 bouts of breast cancer in 4 years and are the stronger for it.
As a result of this health crisis, I became interested in learning about health & wellness. How can I possibly prevent this from happening again? How can I teach my children, my husband, my family and friends to be preventative? What could I do to help myself and serve others? Thus, I became a health coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, I got certified in Reiki and Access Bars energy work, became an Aromatouch Instructor and an essential oils expert. Also, I am a lover of all thing’s health and wellness. I love to try new products and services so that I may be a resource for others looking for solutions.
Starting a new business brought on its own challenges. I decided to start networking to help my business grow and I loved it. I joined many groups, but one really stuck out. Through this organization I became the Director of the women’s group called Evolve in Columbus Ohio. Although now I am retired from that position, it helped me realize my passion is to help women with their wellness, mental health as well as business success. Thus, I became a Creatrix Transformologist this year to help women shed their (personal and generational) limiting beliefs to live their best, most authentic lives and change the path of future generations.
My goal is to leave a legacy of prevention and help other women do the same!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I feel like giving resources freely has been one way I have built a reputation of trust. Also, referring to other product /services/coaches to give people options other than just my solutions. I am prevention minded and human centered person so whatever will help someone move forward in wellness, that is the best course of action.
Because of this trust, I have people reach out to me to talk to their friends and family that might need help with wellness solution. Especially if they have been diagnosed with cancer as I have been through it and have been cancer free for 14 years. I truly enjoy seeing other get healthy. Helping others is so rewarding and I love seeing the ripple effect as they feel better and then pay it forward to help friends and family.
I remember when I first got into educating about essential oils and I would host classes. People would come to learn. Some would buy and some would not. I rarely heard from people that would not buy anything but sometimes I would get a message (even years later) saying thank you for teaching me about essential oils as they have changed my life. And although I never got the sale, the thank you I still remember today.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
So many book and courses over the years have helped me grow as a human being and leader. However, recently I have read the book Mind Hacking Happiness and it was a game changer. I am now reading the second book! There is also a website that I plan to sign up for a 45 day course.
I bought the book for my own personal happiness and I learned so much about the human mind and how it works. The author tells the details in an easy to understand way. I have already started implementing the information in the book and it has been super helpful for me as personally as well as my understanding of other people. I believe understanding other people creates empathy, compassion and patience which is key to leadership, relationships and fostering community.
Also, being less stressed and creating happiness on demand helps you to be your most authentic self where you can create better connections. Leading to more sales and enlarging your business.
I suggest getting it on audible as the author reads the book. He is engaging and funny.
