We were lucky to catch up with Susie McCarty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Susie, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I never felt like I was taking a risk. I always just knew I could do it and I just remember being extremely excited, not being able to get much sleep at night thinking about all the possibilities with opening the first modeling and acting agency in Utah. My goal was to be one of the top agencies in the country and I am very lucky that I was able to start my business out of my home with very little overhead.
Susie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi I am Susie McCarty. I am The owner of McCarty Agency. we represent models, actors and voiceover talent. We have been in business for 50 years. As far as my background, I grew up on a farm in Riverton Utah. During that time I developed a very strong work ethic and a deep love for animals, and flower gardens. At 13 we moved from the farm into Salt Lake City by Liberty Park. I would go to the park every day to learn how to play tennis. I became a state champion in tennis, playing in my division. I played tennis through high school and into college, I was also a cheerleader at the University of Utah where I met my first husband Lee Grosscup. He was all American quarterback for the University of Utah and after we got married we moved to New York City were I was exposed to modeling and fashion.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I have always been very good with people and making a connection and understanding the human condition. To be able to really listen to people and always find the common ground. And most importantly having a wonderful, hardworking staff. A heartfelt thanks to those who run our agency. I am lucky to have two amazing women that have been with me for many years. Maryanne Bowman has been working for me for 10 years.
Michelle Heiden has been working for me for 25+ years and has wonderful relationships with talent, clients and has always kept our office running smoothly. Our newest additions to our McCarty family the last couple years are Shelley Carling, Kylie Furner and Nygelle Heiden.
As the business has changed over the years, we have always kept a good reputation by being reliable, consistent, having the some of best actors and models in Utah and by keeping up with the changing industry.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being able to work with humans for 50 years should say enough about my resilience. One of my greatest strengths is Understanding the Human Condition. Knowing our complicated emotions, and taking the time to listen.
