We recently connected with Susannah Cutler and have shared our conversation below.
Susannah , appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I am fueled by a desire to uncover what feels true for me in order for other people to feel seen through my music as well. We are all guarded and protecting ourselves in one way or another, and art plays a vital role of facilitating connection beyond those boundaries of self-protection and self-denial.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a songwriter and a visual artist. I started writing songs when I was little. I grew up in a family of musicians, so there were always instruments around. I named my band “Yours Are The Only Ears” and started playing shows around Brooklyn in 2014. Since then I have released 2 full length albums. One is called “Knock Hard” (2018) and my most recent release is called “We Know The Sky” (2023).
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
In 2020 I read “The Artist’s Way,” a self-help and spiritual guidebook for artists wanting to discover and recover their creative urges and habits written by Julia Cameron. I found it helpful and eye-opening in a lot of ways. There is a lot of fear that comes up when embarking on any creative endeavor and she helps you face that and move past it.
Another resource that I am currently inspired by is the therapeutic process of what is called IFS or Internal Family Systems founded by Richard Schwartz. It’s a trauma therapy modality and philosophy that there isn’t a mono-mind, but rather a multitude of parts and personalities inside of us that come out in different scenarios. I believe that the process of getting to know our own parts, the ones we’ve exiled and the ones that are trying so hard to keep us safe, can lead to increased creativity and connection. I am excited to use this as a tool in my songwriting going forward.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I struggled with depression growing up, which made believing in myself and my art a huge struggle for me in the beginning. However, sadness is something that has inspired a lot of my music. I think that every time I felt that way and crawled my way out enough to write a song or create art in some form was a huge triumph for me.
