We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Susan Weiss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
For the majority of my photography projects i begin with no definite concept in mind. I just begin photographing. Sometimes it can take months until falling into place. Examples with this questionnaire are all of projects that began in this manner..
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I began drawing as a young child and continued without formal education for many years. When the opportunity came up I entered art school as a part time student at the junior college level. Over the years (5) i worked up to getting an MFA in painting. I was successful as a painter for many years but felt isolated because of the time spent in my studio. At some point I decided to just focus on photography, which was the basis for my painting, and never looked back. I continue to teach drawing but no longer paint. My photography career has been steady and I enjoy being out in the world, meeting people, and engaging with others.
I think there should be more financial and business support for creative ecosystem. I believe that many artists work and struggle to get some attention to their work but often that route does not work for them. I would like to see a public forum where artists can be provided space to talk and show their work so that many in the community and the wider internet community can view it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I maintain a website, IG as do most artists. In addition, I try to enter and participate in as many forums on the internet as possible. Over the years I have also taken on line classes which has helped me to connect with other artists and build my viewership
