Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Susan Klaich. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Susan, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Some of the biggest trends with interior design right now are nature inspired. Neutral colored walls and adding greenery and earthy elements, eco- friendly materials and a soothing atmosphere. Think terra-cotta pots and faux trees. I recently decorated a Dental office waiting room with a nature inspired theme. Lots of faux plants, ceramic and clay pottery, and neutral colored paintings . It really does have a calming effect on your mind and body.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up in a very small town. There were six of us sharing one bathroom. We were pretty cramped, but we made it work. I always dreamed of having my own house and decorating it the way I wanted too. I was always into decorating and creating my own personal space. Even while sharing my bedroom with my stepsister, I created divisions in the bedroom to have a private area to myself.
I love creating beautiful spaces for my clients that look and feel luxurious without the price tag.
I love the reactions I get from my clients after the space is complete. Most of them tear up, they just love it! They love it even more when I tell them that I was under budget.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Being your own boss, especially in the interior design market, you always have to pivot. You have to have a plan, A, B, C, D, etc. I’ve been working in Fort Lauderdale, and it was challenging to find the right companies for the job when you’re not from that area. I do most of my work from Pittsburgh, PA. When I fly to Florida, I have to check and recheck my suitcases. I take everything from a power drill to scotch tape. Scheduled appointments made months ago can get tangled into others. That’s when pivoting is important. Taking a step back and turning your attention away and then focusing back again. I’m getting very good at that.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
About 5 years ago I learned a trick of hanging pictures with scotch tape, and a marker. You cut off a piece of scotch tape that is longer than the two holes on the back of your picture. You mark the holes and then stick the tape on the wall where you’d like to hang your picture. Get out your leveler and nails. It works every time.
