We recently connected with Susan Armstrong and have shared our conversation below.
Susan , appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
Oh, my goodness, a resounding YES! I started the business in 2011 after I severely broke my ankle and couldn’t work as a bartender for 6 months. I get bored quickly and I am very work oriented. I had painted my whole life and crafts, so I searched for ‘something’ to keep my hands busy. Discovering candle making was the first step. Diving in and putting my monies in for the starter kit, I was on my way!! Becoming the world’s okiest candle maker, my Mama asked… “have you ever made jewelry?” With a quick and snappy “NO” answer, the seed had been planted. I had gone back to bartending and decided I needed a change. Creativity has also been the best outlet for me. I do wish I had started many, many moons before I even broke my ankle. I wish, I wish, I wish! Then again, all things happen for a reason. I then started the path to jewelry making.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hunny Hush is as about as a Southern explanation as you can get. When starting the business, I didn’t want a name that focused on one product, yet something that covered my Appalachian heritage, my wide range of what I ‘might make’. I was determined to find a “fit” for ME. What could set me apart? My biggest branding for me has been my etching. I can draw whatever I wish on a tiny canvas of metal, paint it and it’s wearable! I have done a wide range of barns, pets, flowers and logos for businesses. I am making wearable ART! I love rustic and eclectic, which is the bare base of my business. Nothing I do will look exactly like the other (maybe a similarity), but each are unique. Clients come to me with ideas I try to execute. I also make cremation jewelry with tiny mosaic tiles and enameled pieces using the ‘crackle method’. When making I put thoughtfulness, care and compassion into each piece.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Without a doubt…be consistent. Consistently replying when a question is asked. Consistently being honest if I could NOT make a particular idea. Consistent in making quality and durable pieces. People want to feel connected to the process and that you are making just for them.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of Mouth is the first. People letting others know you are there and ready to get creative and do custom work just for them. Next would be sharing what you do on FB or IG. Letting them know what you do and where it will be. Making it easily accessible, like my website or Market(s) I attend to find me.
