Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Suru Ayo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Suru, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Honestly, I was born this way. Having an eye for aesthetics, design and curation came naturally. God blessed me. I figured out I loved poetry at a young age and fashion soon after. Those to things taught me structure and the process of cohesion. Knowing what I know now if I could have had a designer for a mentor or even a museum curator I could have skipped a lot of things including art school at the University of Houston. The most essential skill in the art/creative world in my opinion is your eyes/imagination. The ability to see something that’s not yet created and create it or find someone who can. The biggest obstacles in the way of learning for me was my culture. Nigerian parents are adamant about practical life paths. Art is a new thing to them and new is not stable to them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Suru Ayo. Suru in the language of my forefathers means patience and Ayo means joy. Those are two key things that have helped me. I am a curator, designer and consultant. I began loving art at the innocent age of 14, that led to interests in fashion and curation. Curation of music(dj) and aesthetics. I got deep into photography around later and that led me to art school. I networked and met a lot of creatives in the city and around the world. I’ve done everything from art design to styling people for photo shoots to curating and starting my own Zine (magazine.) If you give me your vision I can help bring it to life when it comes to media, digital media or art. I’m unique in a plethora of ways one being I can see the future. Literally and figuratively. I can project where industries, aesthetics and vibes are going and that helps with my art and serving my clients needs. I’m most proud of my ability to do my own thing outside of the group think and still flourish. My company is called THM Comapny pronounced like “them.”
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFTs, the blockchain and crypto currency will play a big part in the future of the internet and the world. People are getting tired of the systems and powers that be as they are now. The internet has always been a conduit for change and it always will be.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
My purpose is to help young creatives and artists anyway I can. That drives me to my goal which is to be a undeniably successful art business man. Virgil is one of my examples of a industry hoping Swiss Army knife of a designer.
