We recently connected with Supriya Soni and have shared our conversation below.
Supriya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Hello beautiful people, at first I started my henna artist career as a hobby as it was always my hobby since childhood but then slowly as I practiced, connected with correct wedding vendors and customers I was able to grow this hobby as a full time profession. Although its definitely a seasonal business with various density of days and months, but constant practice, portfolio development, learning new skills and techniques, connecting with fellow henna artists and developing new and innovative products for the henna shop are the other things that can be done over the not so busy days. If I knew this journey from day 1 I would have emphasized on the process of developing a website, registering your small business, connecting with different event vendors, packaging and marketing of your product and importance of beautiful pictures of process and final designs for your portfolio.
Supriya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello everyone, I am Supriya Soni, Designer by profession and artist by nature. I and have studied masters and bachelors in Textile and Knitwear design and always had this hobby of creating detailed miniature arts. I used henna as my medium and started henna arts as a hobby. I never knew that I would enjoy it this much to make it my full time work. The process is very meditative to me and I enjoy every bit of it. I am proud of my skill and ability to add a beautiful stained memory to happy times of my consumers and also a big smile to their face. I provide my complete attention and detail to design for each of the work I do, whether its a simple guest henna or the bridal henna, I would give it the same amount of dedication and attention because no job is small in the world. I started my small business named Suppa Henna arts in 2020 and never looked back since then. All the love from my consumers have always pushed and motivated me to do better every time from the last time.
How did you build your audience on social media?
To be honest, Social media has personally helped my to grow my small business and identity in this new country and new city. When I moved here from India in 2020, I did not knew even a single person in this country but social media like Facebook and Instagram have helped me a lot. I started with clicking pictures and posting small video clips as reels, my motivation was all the sweet comments and some of the viral reels on Instagram. The key Is to keep documenting and keep posting, even on the days when you are not doing something new, it inspires you to keep doing creative work and keeps your presence strong in the feed media.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to become celebrity henna artist in USA, when I started this career journey from a hobby little did I thought that I would enjoy it this much. I want to practice and learn all the best skills for this profession and setup a successful small business. I would also want to train and teach new artists and hire them to grow my team to serve different parts of the states. I know arts is always considered as a part time/hobby ideas but my mission is to become a Proud full time celebrity henna artist.
