We recently connected with Super Beth and have shared our conversation below.
Super Beth, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Is there a heartwarming story from your career that you look back on?
It was the fall of 2019 when I was diagnosed with cancer. As a traveling bellydance teacher and performer, I had a full list of engagements scheduled for 2020. Upon hearing of my diagnosis, I need to cancel that list of engagements to undergo my treatment. Upon hearing of my cancer diagnosis, the community festival I was supposed to perform at had participants get together to send cards, videos, and raise money for me during my treatment. I was beyond elated and will never forget their compassion and support during this terribly painful moment in my life.
Super Beth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started bellydance on a whim. I was new the community and just looking to make friends. My former teacher and business partner, opened my eyes to the possibility of teaching and performing dance at a professional level. As part of my journey, my goal was to provide more than a dance class to my students, but rather to provide a place to connect with others, a community that embraced our shared love of the art, and connect with audiences through unique performances.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During my cancer treatment, I continued to dance as much as I could despite the pain, exhaustion, and yes, even bellydancing with an iliostomy (my intestine hanging out of my body).
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Perseverance and practice. You don’t get ahead without some failure and setbacks. People taut “natural talent,” but it’s been my experience that it doesn’t get you over the finish line. You need to continue to plunge forward, learning from your setbacks, and continue to practice, practice, practice your trade.
