We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sunset Etc. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sunset, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Being in a band is a journey unlike any other. When you are sharing this concentrated thing like music, you have to be able to go with the flow, there are a lot of interwoven frequencies with family lives, work, and balancing your passions. There are unexpected problems and obstacles and you have to nurture an environment where everyone can feel good about being in the project and that they very much matter to the equation.
Out in the wild of playing shows and existing in the scene you encounter a whole new set of obstacles when you are playing live music with instruments and various pieces of technology. We have had such a wild spectrum of experiences in this band that have garnished unexpected problems. We have arrived at gigs where no sound guy was hired and had to repair and engineer broken PA systems to get the show up and running. We have had gear fail mid performance and had to move forward while resolving the issues. We have had our pay donated to other bands without our consent and money withheld from us. We have gotten sick on the road and had to play through it. I could generate a seemingly endless list of obstacles that are always unexpected and we have learned to be like water in these situations.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well first and foremost we found each other through the local music scene. Rue and Daniel were in a previous project together and had met at a local rehearsal facility several years ago. Abe works at a local music shop and would regularly attend the shows Rue and Daniel were playing in a previous band and through some cosmic winds and turns they found union together. What we bring to the table is a very high energy and emotionally charged live performance that pays homage to the grunge and punk rockers we grew up loving. We love to practice and spend time writing and jamming together so we have become incredibly tight and capable of navigating good and bad stages and circumstances. We are most proud of our work ethic and grassroots style marketing and being very competitive people, we are constantly trying to out do ourselves with every show and every music release.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support local! We know this sounds cliche but you have to give to that part of your community in order to get back. It’s a conscious and continuous effort to try and support local creatives in all capacities to keep the pulse thriving and growing. Showing up and being present is the key component. Sharing, liking, and engaging with posts online is great and all, but there is something more alive about getting out there and being a part of your local scene.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To live in our service to the music and using it to trail blaze a path that pays forward inspiration to the next generation. We are looking for the team of people that can help us achieve this, one goal would be to find a small indie label to sign with that has the resources to provide us with growth but also has a decent moral compass. It is our dream to tour this music and share our brotherhood through this journey together.
