Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sundae Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sundae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time, I would wish that I started my business sooner. I’ve always been creative and dreamed of having my own fashion business since I was in middle school. I would paint alphabets on my jeans, characters, and anything just to match the shoes I was wearing. I cut up anything that was in sight and looked wearable! My favorite thing to do was to cut one pant leg into shorts and make the shirt the same. Some people would laugh at me and some would just say “that’s unique” Literally NO ONE was wearing these pants! If only I had someone that believed in me enough to nurture my idea 20 years ago or if I would have believed in myself then the way I do now, I could have been a big hit! Now fast forward 2 decades later and it’s the hottest trend!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2016 I lost my older sister and fell into a deep depression. even while being pregnant, I no longer had the same outlook on life. In 2017 after an emergency delivery, I decided I would try my best to get back to me. I started sewing again and just crafting 24/7. I started posting my work and people started liking it and sharing it. I then started donating my work to shelters and people in need. I saw the rise in bullying for children and decided to show parents how they could spice up non popular branded shoes from Walmart and other discount stores. That’s what really blew my business up! I enjoy what I do. Seeing people get excited makes me happy. For every smile oh trust me I also received a lot of negativity from people. I was ridiculed for wearing the shoes and more. But that didn’t stop me. I now teach these methods at various shelters throughout GA. I also hold classes online for people who want to learn. I’m all about positivity and that’s all you will see once you follow my social media or brand. It’s all about lifting one another up!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started posting on TikTok every day. At first, I wasn’t consistent. I thought I could just post 1 time and it would be an instant success. boy was I wrong! Once I created a routine, that’s when I started to see growth. If I posted a video and it didn’t get a lot of views, I reposted it with a different sound and hash tags. You can literally become a millionaire using social media. I believe that if you can make just $1 online then you can make $1MIL just as easy. The key to this believe it or not is CONSISTENCY.
Post 3-5 videos of your products per day
Post the video across multiple platforms.
Remove watermarks.
BE YOURSELF!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think me being myself helped me a lot. I am very transparent online and I pride myself on being as truthful as possible with people, so they don’t get caught up in the glitz and glamz of social media. I want people to see my struggles, wins and trials. I don’t want people to think this road is as easy as some people make it seem because it is NOT. I have been through so much in my life that other people, if given my shoes couldn’t walk in. Also, my customers and how I treat other people helps build my reputation in the market. People are walking billboards and I believe that if you treat people good then God will send you more people.
