We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sun Li a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sun, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media to save on costs. It takes up most of my time since my marketing strategy focuses solely on social media. It could be a challenge running it alone as I’m the sole content creator, videographer, editor, and copywriter for all the content I create. The results of running social media thus far are astounding, but it could get pretty tricky. There are days where I make conversions from it and there are days that videos just aren’t sticking. I’m the only one strategizing so that’s the tricky part with running it alone. I may not be on the algorithm one day and I may be the next. My lesson is that if businesses can have a team for social media, it’s very crucial to the brand! If business owners aren’t on social media then they need to be because they’re missing out on making more money from it!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sun, owner of my first business, Euphoric Sun. Euphoric Sun is a Chinese culture-inspired makeup and accessories brand looking to share Chinese culture through beauty. Euphoric Sun is the first Chinese-culture-inspired makeup brand in the US! I got into makeup because I’ve always done makeup and loved it as well as creating content on Instagram and YouTube. I decided to combine the two things I love and create a business during 2020 since it was tough to find a job right after college during a pandemic. The problem I solve is getting those who were teetering on whether to wear makeup, to dive into this creative world that will make them feel happy. Alongside that, my customers love it when I share parts of my own culture within the makeup. I’m most proud that I was able to create it into what it is today. I never imagined that Euphoric Sun would become a “brand” so when it blew up in 2021 I was very surprised by that feat. From then on, I’ve been trying to grow it in various ways and jumping into different avenues of marketing and selling.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivots seem to happen to me more often than not. I pivoted from being an engineering graduate to being an entrepreneur, it was a great decision because in my heart I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. At this time in life, I’m doing another pivot which isn’t as big as graduating and starting a business, but still one that scares me. I’m diving into different realms of growing the business and as for myself, I’m currently looking for work to sustain me and the business. I also want to learn new skills so I might return to school for certain creative certificates. Now that’s a lot and it sounds scary too but I’m ready to take the next steps in life and pivoting will always be a part of it.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started from scratch just like any business that wants to start on social media. The key to building an audience is to be consistent in posting content and interact with other audiences. You’re basically trying to collect as many eyes to your brand as possible so the more you connect with others, the more they will see you as well. Be genuine on social media because that’s what people will buy into. All I did was be consistent with posting, following trends sometimes, and interacting with others’ posts. Sometimes something will stick and sometimes it won’t so I just need to keep at it and keep trying new things!
