We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sun A’marri a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sun, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
In music, I think it’s easy to feel like you’re working towards something, when in reality you’re going nowhere fast. For years, I was blindly working as hard as I could, on as many projects as possible, but I never saw progress in my career. I thought talent was enough. I thought work ethic was enough. But through many trial and error scenarios, I learned you have to have a specific goal and plan. You can stay on Earth or shoot for the stars, but it’s important to objectively look at what progress you made (if any) and think about if what you’re doing is really working for YOU or not.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My main artist name is Sun A’marri. My secondary name for my experimental work is darkidolprince. I am a musician form Cleveland, Ohio. I got into music from playing violin at 5 years old and guitar in middle school at 13 years old. Since learning guitar, I’ve also learned to play bass, make beats, produce, engineer, shoot videos/photos, edit videos/photos, write songs and a lot more on the business/admin side of things.
I’ve done a lot of executive producing of projects (whether EPs or LPs) for artists being able to handle every aspect of the work from A-Z. I’ve also gigged with several bands as a guitarist or bassist. Now I’m more interested in experimenting with as many genres as possible, scoring film, TV, commercials or video games, and selling songs outright.
My obsession is not with external factors like money, social capital, likes or anything like that. I’m purely obsessed with my own capabilities as someone who creates something from nothing and the discovery that takes place in endless trial and error. The freedom in my willingness to go from rnb to metalcore to jersey club to something else is what I’m most proud of. People who resonate with my contributions usually say they dont care what genre I do, as long as I keep going.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Splice. Reddit. VPN. Sweetwater.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is expressing the things you wouldn’t say in your day to day.
My craziness, darkness, stupidity, arrogance, humor and joy all have a home in the things I create.
