Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Summer Solano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Summer , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
When it comes to asking friends & family to support your business, It can be really tough to come to terms with the fact that the people closest to you—whether family, friends, or significant others—might not offer the support you need or expect. This realization can feel like a betrayal or deep disappointment. But it doesn’t make it any easier to cope with.
Sometimes, people in your life might not fully understand your situation or the support you’re asking for. They may have different priorities or be dealing with their own struggles, which can prevent them from showing up the way you need them to. Other times, they might have their own biases, fears, or insecurities that make it difficult for them to offer the kind of encouragement or understanding you’re seeking.
What’s Appropriate is: Sharing Your Passion: , Asking for Advice: and Offering Discounts or Incentives. Whats not appropriate: Constantly Asking for Money, Assuming They Should Buy, and Making Your Business Their Responsibility.
When it comes to drawing the line, You must Be Transparent and Respectful, Evaluate Their Willingness and Offer Alternatives.
When the world shut down back in 2020 I would follow a lot of business owners on instagram and reach out to them during the pandemic in regards to what I do. Fast forward I was able to get a lot of clientele since there were a lot of start up businesses or needed to re brand. I began to realize that strangers support you more than people that you know.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Summer Solano, is a Brand Specialist & Social Media Manager based in New York City, turned her early passion for art into a thriving career. In 2019, she founded Published by Sumz while still in college, overcoming challenges in finding part-time employment. This initiative enabled her to focus on expanding her artistic endeavors outside of school hours. Throughout her design journey, Summer has worked closely with diverse clients, ranging from small businesses to prominent corporations like Wells Fargo, TWG Companies, and Pacific Life.
In 2021, Summer decided to further expand her skillset by staying on as an intern with Unity for Equality, a nonprofit organization her professor had connected her to. Initially joining as an intern, she quickly grew into the role of Social Media Manager, where she gained valuable experience in digital strategy, content creation, and brand development. In addition, Summer applied the information to expand to different partnerships. This position allowed her to diversify her creative capabilities, merging Graphic Design with Social Media Management, and continue to build a broad skillset in the creative industry.
