We were lucky to catch up with Summer Logan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Summer, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My choice to pursue a career as a natural hairstylist came from the determination to be true to myself and to do it unapologetically. My career path is very competitive. If you don’t stand out you will have average profits. I had to become what I wanted to attract. I had to get in a lane where there were not so many artists but a high demand. So I looked at myself in the mirror and gave my inner creative being permission to come forward. I began to transform in a matter of hours. I wicked my own hair and added colors to overly express the beauty of loc culture. My creative super power is loc conversions from traditional Locs to Wicks. I honor the transition into each loc journey by creating an unforgettable experience for my clients during this service.

Summer, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
One day I was asked to instant loc my friends hair. I researched the technique and she let me practice on her. I soared from there. After much practice and studying I began offering Instant loc services and loc repair. This creative niche transformed into creating Wicks. Now I’m known as the Wick Lady it makes me laugh a little, but I think I like the community buzz.
I create loc styles for individuals of all ethnic people and backgrounds to be able to present themselves to the world through the beauty of locs.
During this journey I have created rapid regrowth treatments that help recovering cancer patients, people that suffer from severe anxiety, and hair loss due to medications regrow there hair. These treatments bring me so much satisfaction by successfully changing lives, giving people joy and confidence through the gift of hair.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is that success or failure is all on me. I have no excuses, I can’t point fingers, I must remain 100% accountable at all times. In my mind there is no other competition, but me. I am so unique in the way I present and create. I get to stand side by side with other creatives with no jealousy, strife, or competition in my heart. I honor everyone’s talents and gifts. I am unapologetically me and that gives me a peaceful place in my mind to create my work.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the negative cognitive thought process surrounding locs. The offensive terminologies for example the word dreadlocks. There is nothing dreadful about them. Or people would refer to locs a snakes. I unlearned that they were for only black people. Or that locs were just a way for people to get out of doing their hair. I really laugh at that because loc maintenance is not cheap and not for the weak. These styles takes hours and sometimes days to create. The process can be painful, but it’s a rewarding process in the end.
