We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Summer Hughes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Summer below.
Summer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
For the first time in my life, all my forms of income come from creative work. Whether teaching art to kids, giving ceramic lessons, selling paintings, or designing weddings, it is all through using my creative expertise. I have always been an interdisciplinary person. I am easily bored if I am only working on one job or working on one piece of art or with one medium. I need a multitude of avenues for my inspiration to filter through.
Summer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I run a ceramic studio here in Kauai. I also paint for a local company and run regular art workshops and provide design concepts for a local wedding business. The most frightening and the most exciting thing I’ve ever done was take the leap to fully commit myself to a workload full of artistic endeavors. Seeking only those that facilitate my imagination and creativity. I spent many years working up the courage (and the savings) to be able to embark on this journey and the universe has rewarded me for my bravery and for taking the risk.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, I can’t breathe without having an outlet for my creativity. I process my emotions, my thoughts, my experiences, through my art and any project I can to express myself or an idea or feeling I may be having. it is really my therapy, my breath, my world. It is the driving force of my existence.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe we always need more art in our lives. It provides so much for our overall well-being. by allowing ourselves to give expression to what we hold inside, we are able to share experiences, thoughts, emotions, ideas. We build community and connection between al individuals when we can take the vulnerable step to express ourselves. Creative expressions should be reveared as equal to all careers and education should be encouraged for it.
