We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Summer Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Summer below.
Alright, Summer thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path from a very young age. I always excelled in school artistically, I knew that was what I was good at, and felt that was my passion. After graduating with my M.F.A. in Museum Exhibition Planning & Design, the opportunities within the art field started opening up for me. I worked in design firms, museums, and currently in art education. I love teaching art, I truly feel that is my calling. I currently teach at a college level and have created my own business, “Art with Summer” where I teach all age groups, group classes, one on one, sip and paints and I create commissioned work.
Summer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m from Massachusetts and have been creating art since I was a little girl. I knew I was good at it, and wanted that to be my career path. I’ve worked in the arts almost my whole adult life. I’ve worked in design firms, museums and currently teaching in higher education. I wanted to create my own thing, so I created “Art with Summer”, which is my own business.
I specialize in online and in person art classes, sip and paints, and I also do commissioned work. I’m very flexible and cater to my clients needs. I’m most proud of seeing the expressions on my clients faces after they’ve completed an art piece they didn’t think they initially could achieve. I work with clients of all ages, and they all bring me joy.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having the liberty to be able to be free. By free, I mean having the space to create whatever it is that’s in my soul and then being able to share that art with the public. Also, being able to share my craft with others. I’ve been teaching for many years, and I enjoy sharing my experiences with my students.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Some non-creatives may not understand our journey. Many think we just paint pretty pictures and make a lousy living off of what we create. However, that isn’t the case. Many of us have regular 9-5’s and create on our own time. My small business, “Art with Summer” is a passion of mine, but I also work in higher education. I’ve found my passion, and like they say, “If you find your passion, you will never work a day in your life.” I love what I do, so it doesn’t really feel like work.
