We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Summer Azul a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Summer, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I enjoy inspiring people and helping others. One of the most meaningful projects I have ever worked on is building off grid villages and helping urban communities learn how to grow their own food. I started my AzulArmy nonprofit organization in order to teach people how to garden, cook, and build. I have helped hundreds of families become self sufficient and I continue to inspire thousands of people daily through my social media platforms.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First and foremost I am honored to be recognized on this platform! I truly enjoy motivating others and it is with love that people share my content. I started out using social media to post positive videos on timelines during the pandemic and now I’ve transformed my creative work into a real life community outreach program.
Prior to the pandemic I had only made post about my work as an actress, rapper, and filmmaker in the entertainment industry. I toured the world doing music as a rapper and I starred in many stage play performances as an actress. I debuted my first reality-documentary on Amazon Prime titled “The Truth About Relationships” and I was always on the scene. I’m also momager to my (now 7 year old) daughter, Autumn Azul, who is also an actress and has been on TV (She plays Aliyah on The Walking Dead) for over 4 years. My life was all about the entertainment business and I shared my love for the arts via social media.
Things suddenly changed once the pandemic hit and we were Quarantined. I decided to cheer people up by posting videos of my daughter and I at home cooking, gardening and doing DIY projects, I called the series #MySuperQuarantinedLife.
After going viral several times on Facebook and Instagram, I decided to use my platform for something even bigger. Not only did I begin to share my spiritual journey with my followers (I was initiated as an Iyanifa/High priestess in Nigeria) but I also invited my viewers to join me by purchasing land and building our own villages off grid in Georgia.
For the past year I have helped hundreds of families buy land, grow food and build their own off grid communities. I have built several villages, in which I teach classes, hold workshops and even offer spiritual guidance and natural healing services. I’m currently running a Go-Fund Me campaign in order to buy more land and build more schools , homes and healing spaces so that the outside public will have a chance to visit and experience the off grid lifestyle we provide in The Azul Villages.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My life goal has always been to leave a positive impact on humanity. I don’t just want to be loved and remembered, I want people to remember how to love themselves! I hope to inspire others to make positive changes in their mental, physical and spiritual lives.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about the things that I do, is the response and respect that I receive from others. When a complete stranger tells me that I’ve changed their life or inspired them to do something different, bigger or better, that makes me feel like everything I do is worth it!
