We were lucky to catch up with Sumedha Rai recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sumedha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about exceptional people is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Senior Data Scientist and AI researcher, based in New York, with a focus on using artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems, especially in the fields of finance and healthcare. My current role at a micro-investments firm involves leading AI initiatives for fraud detection and developing all Natural Language Processing projects. Additionally, I’m engaged in groundbreaking research with the Center for Data Science at NYU and the Langone Medical School, exploring the applications of large language models in medicine and AI in neurosurgery.
Before entering the world of data science, I spent some years working in investment banking and private equity. It was during this time that I developed a fascination for the technology behind products, often diving deeper into technical aspects during evaluations rather than just focusing on business metrics. This passion led me to transition to data science, aiming to leverage machine learning to tackle complex issues in finance, at that time. Over the years, this work in AI has led me on the most interesting journey of working across different industries and creating models for some thought provoking issues faced by companies.
In my work as a data scientist, I utilize extensive datasets to build predictive models that aid in decision-making. I have addressed a variety of challenges across different sectors, including creating algorithms for fraud detection, misinformation, language based predictions, sentiment analysis and supply chain optimization, to name a few.
One of my most significant accomplishments was developing a predictive model for a very large bank that assessed the probability of a borrower defaulting on their loan obligations. This model, which analyzed a combination of structured and unstructured data, was instrumental in the bank’s risk management strategy for over two years. The extensive amount of data I analyzed for this prediction was remarkable, and it evolved into one of my most enduring projects and its final deployment brought me a great sense of achievement. I was lauded by the topmost executives in the bank for this effort.
Beyond my professional roles, I am actively involved in the academic community as a researcher and a frequent judge for peer-reviewed journals, startup accelerators, and hackathons. I also contribute to the wider discussion on AI through articles, panel discussions, AI and fintech conferences, national radio shows, and podcasts.
I am most proud of the direct impact my work has on operational efficiency and risk management for organizations. My goal is for potential followers and collaborators to recognize the depth of my commitment to advancing AI technology and the breadth of its applications across different sectors. Whether you are a fellow researcher, a potential collaborator, or just someone interested in the intersection of AI and industry, I look forward to connecting and exploring how we can drive innovation together.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In a rapidly evolving field like technology, particularly AI, staying abreast of market changes is almost critical to my work. What’s cutting-edge today may quickly become outdated, replaced by more efficient solutions. As a data scientist, I’m driven by a huge appetite for learning. I eagerly read and consume academic papers on emerging technologies and promptly experiment with their implementation. I also actively contribute to the field by disseminating my findings through major media publications or by authoring my own research papers. This proactive approach affords me a competitive advantage, as I stay ahead of the curve in understanding new technologies.
My commitment to continuous learning extends beyond reading research papers and implementing projects using new techniques and programming languages; I actively engage as a speaker at academic and AI industry conferences. By sharing insights and exchanging ideas in these forums, I not only contribute to the discussions on AI technologies but also enhance my own understanding through dialogue with like-minded professionals.
These contributions have not only enhanced my reputation within the field but have also facilitated valuable collaborations, allowing me to delve deeper into innovative ideas. By consistently cycling through this routine of reading, practicing, discussing, and innovating, I maintain a position at the forefront of AI advancements, garnering recognition for my contributions to the field.
Any advice for managing a team?
I firmly believe that fostering a perpetual sense of curiosity can significantly enhance the performance of tech teams. Throughout my roles as a mentor and manager across various settings, I’ve made it a priority to instill my enthusiasm for experimenting with new technologies in my teams and my coworkers, encouraging them to share the same passion. Technology can be unpredictable; not every endeavor yields success, but there’s invaluable learning in failure—a truth applicable across industries and life in general. This philosophy has become a guiding principle for me. Projects in the tech realm can also often become lengthy and repetitive, leading to monotony. To combat this, I advocate for diversifying tasks with smaller projects on the side to inject some variety and maintain engagement.
Furthermore, I firmly believe in the adage “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Taking breaks is crucial for maintaining mental well-being and sustaining morale. Whether it’s enjoying some unrelated reading, taking up physical activities like sports, or simply taking a long walk in the park in the evening, I emphasize the importance of these breaks to my team and colleagues. Prioritizing mental and physical health not only enhances productivity but also creates a positive work environment and keeps the morale high.
